Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 30

Guardians of energy gave my students hands on learning experiences with making and understanding components of energy. Students rarely get a chance to explore these concepts in a real and meaningful way before they become adults. Most of them would have moved into adulthood and paid their electric bills, but most would never understand the mechanics of energy unless they go to work specifically in that field. Thank you so much for giving our kids these experiences. I tried to upload jpg picture files, but they would not load. If you send me an email, I can send them.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

During 7th period STEAM, grades 6-12 will explore types of energy, power sources, and energy conservation. With this grant, we will be utilizing materials from The NEED Project and the Empower Conference.

What will be done with my students

Each week we will complete 1-2 activities from one of the 3 Units- Science of Energy (6 activities), Energy Managers (6 activities), and H2 Educate (9 activities). There is one teacher and 15 students per day (75 students total). We will do the activities in the STEAM classroom during 7th period (65 minutes). Students will take the pre and post assessments provided in the NEED Project curriculum.

Benefits to my students

This curriculum covers multiple science curriculum standards as well as math and ELA. Students will develop a working knowledge of science vocabulary terms needed for science assessments. These kits will provide the tools needed to teach these energy units for years to come, with consumable materials being the only renewable cost for activities. Energy affects every area of our daily lives. Students will receive an education that is both practical and enriching because of these kits.

Budget Narrative

H2 (Hydrogen) Educate Class Kit -Students are introduced to hydrogen as an important energy carrier — both as a fuel for distributed generation and as a transportation fuel. Students conduct experiments in electrolysis, learn about atomic structure and the periodic table, make molecular models, simulate how a fuel cell works, and explore a hydrogen fuel cell car kit. The kit includes a Teacher Guide, a class set of 30 Student Guides, eight sets of electrolysis apparatuses, sodium sulfate electrolyte, molecular modeling materials, fuel cell simulation materials, and a model hydrogen fuel cell car kit with a detailed manual.
Materials In H2 Educate Kit

8 600 mL Beakers
16 9-volt Batteries
4 AA Batteries
1 Container sodium sulfate
8 Electrolysis apparatuses
2 Extra test tubes
100 ft. Fringe
10 Flashing bulb pins
2 Flashlights (batteries included)
1 Fuel cell car kit
1 Funnel
1 100 mL Beaker
2 Packages clay
25 Wooden splints
100 Small straws
10 Alligator clip sets
1 Pair tongs
30 Student Guides
Materials In Class Set of H2 Educate Consumables

16 9-volt Batteries
4 AA Batteries
1 Container sodium sulfate
2 Extra test tubes
100 ft. Fringe
2 Packages clay
25 Wooden splints

School Energy Masters Class Kit- Students get a first-hand glimpse at career applications and managing their energy use as they explore efficiency and conservation in this set of hands-on activities. The unit has been designed to reinforce student knowledge about energy sources and efficiency and conservation, while students assume the role of an energy manager to monitor school energy consumption data and change behaviors. School Energy Managers serves well as the classroom education component of a total energy management plan for secondary schools. Students will explore thermal energy and insulation, vapor barriers, ventilation, electricity, and lighting, as they analyze their building and develop comprehensive management and conservation plans for their buildings. The kit includes a Teacher Guide, a class set of 30 Student Guides, and the tools and materials necessary to conduct the activities.
Materials In School Energy Managers Kit
1 Incandescent bulb
1 Compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL)
1 Light emitting diode bulb (LED)
1 Kill A Watt® meter
5 Sets of radiation cans (2 per set)
10 Lab thermometers
3 Bags of insulating materials (cellulose, packing peanuts, fiberglass batting)
5 Boxes
3 Student thermometers
1 Light meter
1 Waterproof digital thermometer
1 Digital humidity/temperature pen (hygrometer)
1 9-volt Battery (for light meter)
1 Anemometer
5 Respirator masks
30 Student Guides
Dry Erase markers for working on white boards during labs.
