Walton Education Foundation

In September 2020, only 58% of my 5th grade students scored on or above grade level on the STAR reading assessment. My goal is for 85% of my students to score at or above grade level on the STAR Reading assessment by the end of the 2020-2021 school year. This grant will allow me to add three laptop computers to my classroom and continue moving toward a 1-to-1 classroom model in which every student has access to a device. Students will utilize these devices throughout the year for a variety of collaborative projects, including a research report on Explorers. They will also be used during an enrichment and remediation block to allow students to access programs that are tailored to their individual needs as readers.

Goal

What will be done with my students

- Utilize Office 365 and Microsoft Teams for collaboration and teamwork on projects and assignments throughout the year

- February 2021 - Students will compete a digital, cross curricular, informational research essay project on North American explorers. This project will cover both Social Studies and Language Arts standards while increasing students digital literacy and technology skills. By utilizing Microsoft Teams students and their partners can work on taking notes at the same time on the same documents and groups can work on different PowerPoint slides on the same presentation at the same time.

- October 2020 - May 2021 - During our intervention and enrichment block students will utilize digital programs to strengthen reading, writing, and grammar skills on each students individual level. These programs include Compass Learning and IXL for grammar and reading skills, Freckle, Epic, and Accelerated Reader for reading comprehension, and Study Island for Science integrated reading practice.

Benefits to my students

Access to 3 additional laptops in my classroom will allow for all students to receive intervention an enrichment on their own level. These individualized programs will help students gain and strengthen the skills they need to become strong and independent readers.

Students would not be left to wait while their peers are finishing assignments. As an alternative, they will be able to use these devices log on to a program that challenged them and allows them to continue to grow in their free time.

Finally, students will be able to collaborate digitally to work on group projects. This will allow them to strengthen their digital literacy skills which are critical for our 21sf century scholars.
