Walton Education Foundation

My goal is to add to my classroom library books that are high interest and low reading level for my English Language Learners (ELLs). I will continue to organize the books by Lexile so students can easily know what books are for them at that moment in their learning of English. Finally, I will better organize tablets, laptops, and headphones in my room for ease of access while practicing their English in applications like Duolingo.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 38

I am so proud to say that 100% of my ELL students at Walton High School improved in at least one area (reading, writing, speaking, listening) on their WIDA assessment. Additionally, 96% of my ELL students at Walton High School improved in more than one area (reading, writing, speaking, listening) on their WIDA assessment. Six out of ten of my 9th graders scored points on the FSA essay - meaning they did not copy or write in a language other than English. I am super excited for this growth and look for even more growth by using these items I was able to purchase from the grant.

THANKS!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to add to my classroom library books that are high interest and low reading level for my English Language Learners (ELLs). I will continue to organize the books by Lexile so students can easily know what books are for them at that moment in their learning of English. Finally, I will better organize tablets, laptops, and headphones in my room for ease of access while practicing their English in applications like Duolingo.

What will be done with my students

ELLs in my Reading class will continue to have access to a wealth of high interest and low reading level books grouped by Lexile thanks to this grant. Adding to the class library is essential so they can have books at their interest and reading level that our school library does not provide for them as they are learning English. As they master more and more English, they will grow in their Lexile and have more books at their disposal. I will continue to have Spanish 3/4 students come to my room to listen to my ELLs 1-on-1 as they read these books in English outloud. They help them to pronouce words in English and offer that peer-to-peer support and guidance. The additional headphones will allow all students to plug in and listen while working in the Duolingo application to better learn English. This will allow all students to be working and not bothering others as listen using headphones.

Benefits to my students

I have had Spanish 3/4 students come to my class during the first nine weeks of school with great success! I see my ELLs being proud of themselves. I hear my ELLs actually speaking in English - this is not something they are comfortable with as they acquire the English language. However, there is magic is providing these books and this environment with their peers. I want this to continue! I expect them to continue to raise their Lexile as evidenced by the STAR Reading Assessment (taken at least 3 times during the school year). I also expect the benefit to grow to where my ELLs become more comfortable in their core classes too as they learn English is a safe environment of my classroom and our newcomer program for ELLs. The use of the headphones gives my ELLs yet another way to practice their English. They can listen as words are pronounced and that repetition is necessary for long-term success. Ultimately, I want every ELL to succeed and graduate which means they must learn English to take and pass the state mandated tests required for graduation.
