Walton Education Foundation

My goal is to be able to teach students in a hands on way about a chicken's life cycle. In first grade, we talk about parents and their offspring and living things, this would be a perfect way to tie in a hands on experience to a standard.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 19

My grant was used to show the beginning of the chicken life cycle to my classroom. We watched the whole process from them growing in an egg to hatching and growing! The students in my class LOVED this project and I am so glad they got to experience this hands on learning experience. We watched and candled the eggs in the incubator for 21 days after they hatched. Once they hatched we had the chicks in our classroom for 2 weeks. Over the 2 weeks, we got to watch them grow up in a short amount of time. Once they grew for 2 weeks, we took them back to the farm that we got the eggs from. We were able to share what we were learning with other first grade classes as well. We invited them into our classroom and gave them a chance to look at the chicks and to learn about the process that we went through to hatch the chicks. We had little egg models that really helped the students understand what was going on inside the shell that we couldn't see.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to be able to teach students in a hands on way about a chicken's life cycle. In first grade, we talk about parents and their offspring and living things, this would be a perfect way to tie in a hands on experience to a standard.

What will be done with my students

My students and I will study the Chicken life cycle, then I will get the eggs and we will do research and take notes during the process of the chick growth. We will watch the eggs daily and make notes about what we see during each stage. We will look at the eggs carefully with the microscopes. I want this to be a real scientific study, and I believe the lab coats will be a great addition to their experience as a scientist. Once the chicks are hatched, I will let the students study them for a few days and we will watch how quickly the chicks grow once they are out of the shell. After they have grown, I will send them back to the farm that I got the eggs from.

Benefits to my students

My students are going to benefit with the experience of seeing a real life cycle happen. This will be a lasting memory and educational experience for them. I remember my kindergarten teacher hatching chicks and I remember how engaging it was to watch the chicks grow and hatch. I want to give my students the best experience possible!

Budget Narrative

The incubator, flashlight, and magnifying glasses are for the eggs before they hatch. Once they hatch, I will use the pack and play, heating lamp, heating plate, wood shavings, chicken feed, thermometer, and feeder for the chicken's house while they are still in the classroom. I will use the book, life cycle set, and lab coats to help students feel like scientists and be able to enjoy the experience and have a complete understanding of the process. The cameras will be used to keep up to date real data throughout the process for their writing in the notebooks.
