Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 38

My students loved their new classroom book sets! Their faces lit up with excitemet when they came into my room and saw all four of the classroom book sets neatly stacked on the shelf.  Studets immediately began to ask when they would get to read them and if they could start reading them right then. I used these books during our daily intervention time.  Students were able to complete novel studies in small groups.  Each week, students had a set number of chapters to read, and would then discuss/answer different questions, themes, ideas, and more from the books.  This not only built a sense of classroom community within my small reading groups, but it also allowed my students to enjoy reading and practice the skills we learn in class while reading a fun and entertaining chapter book.  My students particulary loved Save Me A Seat! After reading together for fluency and working on questions for comprehension, students participated in a socratic seminar in which they were able to have an open, student-led discussion about different ideas, themes, and interpretations of the book.  If we did not have these books that were so generously donated to us, then my students would not have been able to have these reading opporunities and interactions with well-written chapter books that are outside of our required books in the curriculum. I cannot wait to use these books again next year! Thank you so much!

Small Group Reading!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to have class sets of 3rd grade level books that can be used for novel studies, reading fluency, small group reading, and reading comprehension.

What will be done with my students

My students will use these books in a novel study. During this novel study, students will follow a step-by-step reading plan that breaks the books down into sections. I will meet with my students throughout our novel study to engage in discussion and activities to expand upon what they have been reading. The students will learn how to have open-ended discussions about the book and learn how other students may connect to the text. These books are highly favored by this age group as a whole, so I would like for the students to be able to read texts that they will enjoy in order to foster a love for reading, while we work on story comprehension and reading skills. Having all of the students working through the novel study fosters a sense of community and allows for the students to have a fun and enjoyable guided reading experience that is used in addition to our required curriculum texts. The class set of novels will be specifically used during our intervention time in which I have an hour of guided activities with my students.

Benefits to my students

My students will be able to have their own copy of a book to use during class time so that they will not have to wait for another student to finish reading before they can have their turn to read. Students will benefit from being able to experience reading a chapter book while also being guided through their comprehension and responses to the text.

Budget Narrative

The funds received from this grant will be used to purchase a total of 4 complete book sets for my students, which is 100 books total.
