Walton Education Foundation

In a child’s world, everything seems to be micromanaged by an adult. From what they eat each day to what they learn in school, students struggle for autonomy over their lives. I want to give my students the power of choice within the classroom. I want to have a variety of seating options to give my students the choice to create their perfect learning environment. When students feel relaxed and in control of their environment, they are more confident and ready to learn! My goal is to have enough flexible seating options in my classroom for each of my students.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 39

Before introducing flexible seating into my classroom, I was having to address and redirect poor behaviors or of task students an average 3 times per hour. My goal was to reduce off task behaviors in order to have at least 80% of my students completing assignments within a 20-minute time frame. My students flourished with the extra independence of getting to choose their workspace over the last few months. Now I only must correct off task behaviors on average of 1 time per hour. Students are also more motivated to complete their work. I rarely (1-2 times a week) have to collect passed due assignments which means that an average of 92% of my students are completing their assignments on time!  Overall adding flexible seating to my classroom has had a positive impact on both my students' behavior and their academic achievement.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

In a child’s world, everything seems to be micromanaged by an adult. From what they eat each day to what they learn in school, students struggle for autonomy over their lives. I want to give my students the power of choice within the classroom. I want to have a variety of seating options to give my students the choice to create their perfect learning environment. When students feel relaxed and in control of their environment, they are more confident and ready to learn! My goal is to have enough flexible seating options in my classroom for each of my students.

What will be done with my students

My students will be given the freedom to choose the learning environment that best fits their needs each and every day. Students will be more invested in the classroom and in their education. My flexible seating options will benefit the 37 students I teach this year, as well as all of the students I will have in the future. Flexible seating will be used throughout the day as students work on whole group, small group, and independent work activities. Giving students the ability to move, rock, or wiggle while they work will help them focus their minds on whatever we may be doing each day. Students will also learn responsibility as they learn how to use flexible seating as a learning tool and not just a fun place to sit.

Benefits to my students

My goal for implementing flexible seating in my classroom is to increase student focus, responsibility, and engagement. By making students more comfortable, they will become more invested in their learning and require less redirection both academically and behaviorally. In order to measure the success of my goal, I will be comparing the time it typically takes students to complete an assignment as well as the amount of times I must redirect a student as they work. My goal is for at least 80% of students to complete their assignments in a 20-minute time frame with one or less redirection required. I will use my behavior forms to track redirections as well as incomplete work.
