My class has 5 ESE students from the ages of 3 to 6. Currently, I have students that are non-verbal and have behavior issues. Sensory play allows students a break and helps them alleviate frustration in a calm manner. I plan to bring the students in on a daily basis and help them develop social learning skills like negotiating and sharing. I plan to try to use the sensory items to help them to relax, focus and calm down. My goal is to decrease their frustration and unwanted behaviors in the classroom. In some instances, I would like them to be able to self sooth by independently going for the item that works for them. I will tract they progress by using behavior checklists and IEP data collection sheets.
I will encourage my students to use these items and areas to help with breaks which in turn will help them get through a day of school less frustrated and more focused. They will be put in available areas for daily use at any time throughout my day. I will incorporate them into my daily lessons by talking about the 5 senses. The mirrors will allow the students to look at themselves and see what emotions they are showing in the faces. The sensory mini mats, putty and gel letters will allow the students different textures to feel. The fiber optic light set give the classroom a calming feeling when the students are in the classroom. The color mats will be used for daily movement, so the students are not sitting too long. The cloud light covers will help the students to not get too overstimulated in the classroom at all times of the day. These items will be available for individual use as well as group activities. Students become overwhelmed in the classroom and calming bottles/lights helps set the tone in a peaceful atmosphere.
These items will benefit my students by allowing them to explore with the 5 senses. These items will help my students be less frustrated during the day and more focused. They will have less behavior issues due to exploring with things they enjoy. Some items will help them grasp objects with decreased discomfort, ultimately helping them play naturally. They will be less overwhelmed in the classroom. These items will help them engage through the world and promote further learning to foster. Some of the items will help with promoting hand-eye coordination, and to increase participation and turn-taking. I am hoping that the parents will see how these items help the students love and enjoy school.
