Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 44

Studies show that reading for 20 minutes daily positively impacts a child’s success at school.  The grant that we received allowed us to purchase a subscription to Tumblebooks.  Tumblebooks are electronic picture books and chapter books that teach kids the joy of reading in a format they love.  With the 12 month subscription we purchased through this grant, all of the Butler elementary students have access to hundreds of electronic books to read in the classroom and at home.  We were also able to purchase ipads for our classrooms so that students can frequently read the Tumblebooks and other electronic resources.  We’ve seen our students love for reading grow as well as a significant increase in their reading proficiency as evidenced by the STAR test.  We feel this grant has made a significant impact on our students as they have become stronger readers and life-long learners in the digital world we live in today.  Thank you CHELCO for funding this grant.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal for Resources for Radical Readers is to provide electronic books for students to read in the classroom and at home and to provide Ipads to increase student access to these electronic books.

What will be done with my students

Students will be encouraged to read using Tumblebooks. TumbleBooks are animated, talking picture books and chapter books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they love. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books and chapter books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce electronic books which students can read, or have read to them. With a 12 month subscription, the Tumblebooks electronic book collection can be accessed in our classrooms from every computer and ipad with Internet connection, or from home through a direct link.

Benefits to my students

Studies show that reading for 20 minutes daily positively impacts a child's success at school in all subject areas. We want to teach student to love reading while helping them improve their reading skills and vocabulary skills during reading practice at school and at home. If we receive this grant, we will purchase new Ipads for our classrooms to give students increased access to electronic books and a subscription to TumbleBooks which will benefit now only our classrooms, but the entire school.

Budget Narrative

The funds will be used to purchase 7 classroom ipads and a 12 month subscription to Tumblebooks. The total cost of this project is $1492.00.
