Allowing children to be exposed at a young age to literacy plays a key role in helping them understand the world and the people around them. When learning opportunities are present that place an emphasis on language and literacy, it creates a strong foundation for reading and writing.

Throughout the school year, I want my students to be actively learning through hands on activities that will foster their growth as well as provide an atmosphere where they love to learn because of the classroom environment.

After my beginning of the year assessments were completed, many of my students are below expectations in the areas of phonological awareness and print knowledge. My overall goal is for each of my students to be meeting or exceeding expectations when they enter kindergarten. These materials will give them opportunities to explore letters, letter sounds and provide a beginning foundation of reading.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 16

The resources provided for me with the grant made a huge impact on my students and their ongoing progress throughout the school year. Many of students began the year below expectations in print knowledge and phonological awareness. They could not identify letters or recognize letter sounds. We used many of the materials in small group settings which allowed us to tailor instruction to the needs of the child. We utilized the materials to work on letters sounds, upper and lower case letter matching, alphabet sequencing and  spelling words including finding letters in their name. My students were so excited to use the materials, and the activities were hands on and engaging. In the last few months, we have been amazed at the progress our students have made and are excited to be able to continue to use the materials for future learners. All of the children in my class (16 total) increased their print knowledge and phonological awareness scores on our end of the year assessments. Some of the students even began the year below expectations and are now exceeding expectations in both areas. I am so thankful for the resources and the impact it had in my classroom.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

In our classroom, small group instruction is an intricate part of our daily schedule where we can provide individualized instruction to every student. Not every child learns the same and being able to individualize instruction means we are creating a diverse learning environment that provides encouragement and support. These materials will be used for guided small group instruction four times a week as well as be available during “Free Choice Center Time.”

These materials have been selected to provide distinct learning opportunities that align with our states developmental learning standards and to give our students a wide range of ways to learn through exploration.

Benefits to my students

With these materials, my class of 13 will have a wide range of learning opportunities available to them throughout the day. From hands on activities, to puzzles and manipulatives, my students will be able to gain knowledge that will prepare them for kindergarten and beyond.

I plan to evaluate my students on a consistent basis that not only aligns with my personal classroom goals but allows me to monitor each student’s progress and success.
