Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

Reading expands vocabulary, and the more you read, the more words you are exposed to.  Consistent exposure to new words, learning their meanings, and seeing the context in which they are used increases your mental dictionary.  The grant that we received enabled us to purchase 40 copies of the novel Wonder and 40 copies of the novel Hatchet as well as 24 intermediate dictionaries and 1 world atlas.  Our students enjoyed novel studies and vocabulary studies using these materials.  Students were able to dig deeper into author’s purpose, making inferences, morals and themes, and learning new vocabulary as they completed the novel studies.  These books, dictionaries, and atlas will continue to benefit students for years to come.  We know this grant helped our students improve their reading, vocabulary, and thinking skills as evidenced on their STAR and FSA tests.  Thank you St. Joe Community Foundation for funding this grant.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal for Expanding Vocabulary is to enhance reading instruction in our classrooms. By May of 2021, students in our school will improve their vocabulary and increase their reading proficiency as demonstrated on FSA.

What will be done with my students

Students will be encouraged to improve their reading and vocabulary skills with two new novel studies (Wonder and Hatchet) and look up unknown vocabulary words using a new set of classroom dictionaries. A new atlas will be needed as well for referece purposes during these book studies. This project will begin as soon as funding is secured and continue through May of 2021. These books will be promoted weekly in book clubs during our class reading time. Wonder and Hatchet have been chosen for their wide appeal, literary value, and curriculum connections.

Benefits to my students

Benefits of Reading: Why You Should Read More on https://jrelibrary.com/ says, "Reading expands your vocabulary. The more you read, the more words you will be exposed to. Consistent exposure to new words, learning their meanings and seeing the context in which they are used will increase your mental dictionary." One goal of our school improvement plan is to increase student vocabulary. My goal is for students to complete two new novel studies with a focus on using the dictionary and atlas as reference tools while reading. All 40 students will be encouraged to participate in this reading program.
