Walton Education Foundation

Since the beginning of my teaching career, one thing I have learned is that students travel on different pathways to reading success. As a teacher, I have also learned that the rewards of reading are immense. Dr. Seuss once wrote "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go." A good book opens up a whole world of knowledge. My goal is to provide students with a variety of books they can enjoy to help them become lifelong readers.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 36

The funds for this grant were used to promote student literacy. An additional variety of genres of books were added to my classroom library in order to movtivate students to do more reading. This was a success, not only were the non-readers motivated, the students in my classroom successfully took and passed over 450 AR tests, and earned over 600 AR points this year! The Accekerated Reader (AR) program is a reading program used in schools to help teachers track students' independent practice and progess with reading. Thank you for the funding, and helping to support litteracy in my classroom!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Since the beginning of my teaching career, one thing I have learned is that students travel on different pathways to reading success. As a teacher, I have also learned that the rewards of reading are immense. Dr. Seuss once wrote "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go." A good book opens up a whole world of knowledge. My goal is to provide students with a variety of books they can enjoy to help them become lifelong readers.

What will be done with my students

Engage students (even reluctant readers) in reading and motivate them to be proactive readers by letting them follow their own interests, looking for different reading opportunities in a wide variety of books and encourage a friendly competition in our school Accelerated Reader (AR) program. This reading program will help me as a teacher track students' independent practice and progress with reading.

Benefits to my students

When school ends, reading never does. Throughout college and even a career, reading is an essential to everyday tasks for people of all ages. When a student graduates and becomes an adult, they will make a transition from reading for school to reading for themselves, for their own enjoyment, self-improvement, and to communicate with colleagues and customers. I would like to build the motivation that will help them become lifelong readers.

Budget Narrative

The $161.91 will be used to add diversity to my current classroom library. In addition, I would like to have space to store the new books and a reading space for students to enjoy them. Therefore, a bookshelf with a reading nook in the amount of $125.00 has been added. I have also included a barcode scanner in the amount of $36.99. This scanner will be used with an app to keep track of the new classroom library books as well as my old library books as I continue to expand my library to inspire students in a lifelong love of reading.
