Walton Education Foundation

Students today are more engaged when they learn by seeing, touching, and becoming physically involved with concepts being taught. As a fourth-grade teacher, I strive to find high interest activities to engage my students in, to enhance their learning in a positive way and to create a love for learning that will last a lifetime.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 18

Thank you so much for providing the funding for our students to receive such amazing items! This year has been phenomenal!

With this project, I incorporated the reading materials into groups, especially the closer we drew to FSA Writing and Reading.  I even used some of the materials for our annual 'Starbooks' Day. The students ENJOYED the hands on learning approach and learned a great deal by working with partners.  I look forward to using them in the future with all 4th graders.

Thank you again for such a wonderful experience for my students! I look forward to working on with these materials for many years to come!

Sincerely,

Samie Wright

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students today are more engaged when they learn by seeing, touching, and becoming physically involved with concepts being taught. As a fourth-grade teacher, I strive to find high interest activities to engage my students in, to enhance their learning in a positive way and to create a love for learning that will last a lifetime.

What will be done with my students

In my classroom, students are instructed on levels that are beneficial to meet each students' individual learning needs. Because this type of instruction cannot be conducted during whole group lessons, small group and independent working time is necessary. The reading and writing center materials requested will greatly enhance this critical need in my classroom this year, as well as years to come. According to the initial STAR Reading Assessment given in August, 6% of my students are below proficiency in reading. I am hopeful that with the addition to my classroom library of the requested high interest books, that my students will enjoy reading them and become engaged in learning and reading in a new and productive way. I truly believe that reading benefits all subject areas and increases a student’s learning. Using scores from the previous year FSA 17 of my 18 students scored 6 or below in writing. I am hopeful that with the addition of these items for writing centers, that students can interact with sentence structure, as well as many crucial comprehension tools, to enhance their ability to become expert writers.

Benefits to my students

If granted the requested reading materials, my students will be able to use these items during reading instruction, independent reading time, as well as during small group "Book Club" time. If granted the requested writing and reading comprehension materials, my students will be able to use these items to enhance what we are learning at the time as well as previously learned concepts by participating in small group centers to learn in a hands on way. It is my hope that the students in my class will be at 80% proficiency in Reading and score 6 or higher on the FSA Writes in April of this year. Not only can these items be used to enhance the education of my 18 students during this school year, but these items can and will be used with fourth graders for years to come.

Budget Narrative

The items requested are from LakeShore Learning, Staples, and Scholastic Book Clubs and were specifically chosen as being related to our fourth-grade math curriculum, and high interest texts to fourth grade students.
