Original Grant Overview

Goal

Learning through play can spark joy in all children. It enables children to explore and make sense of the world around them. It is essential for preschool students to have the opportunity to interact through social scenarios in order to build social and communication skills which will help them become successful as they enter elementary school.

What will be done with my students

Fostering creativity and a love for learning begins at a young age. The students using the items in this grant have language development needs. By engaging in dramatic play they can practice speaking to each other and build their social and academic vocabulary. My students will have an opportunity to use these items everyday through free choice centers. They will be able to use their imagination to create scenarios for both home and future careers.

Benefits to my students

Through dramatic play children are able to build skills to help problem solving, role taking, cooperation, social understanding and so much more. Currently there are 6 students within my ESE class. This is a transitional class in which students will move to a regular Pre-K class and new students will enter throughout the school year. These play items will be able to be used with students for many years to come. I will be tracking the development of my students’ language and social skills prior to the introduction of these items into centers and the benefits after incorporating them into play. The benefit of these items will be evaluated using a daily checklist tracking development of social and communication skills.
