Goal

Flexible seating is a way of opening the classroom learning environment and empowering students to think about how they learn best. I want to give my students the opportunity of choosing their seating preference in order to create the learning environment that is the most beneficial to their learning style. My goal is to have enough flexible seating available for all of my students during the course of our day. I hope to maintain 80% of my students being actively engaged for 20 minutes at a time with being redirected less than twice. I maintain a behavior management system that includes documenting each time I redirect a student. I will use this documentation to track the benefits of flexible seating.

What will be done with my students

My students will be given flexible seating options daily during whole group learning, computer time, small group reading time, DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read), and our Buddy Study time. Research has shown that with flexible seating, students can rock, lean, bounce, etc. which in turn keeps them more alert because it increases oxygen to the brain. This seating will benefit students in my classroom for many years to come.

Benefits to my students

Throughout our day, I repeatedly redirect students for being off task, or misbehaving during our learning times. With flexible seating, students will be engaged and focused more on learning. Greater student engagement has been linked to higher student performance.

Budget Narrative

Funds will be used to purchase 10 stadium/reclining floor seats, 10 balance balls, and 6 balance ball chairs. All items will be purchased from Amazon.
