Original Grant Overview

Goal

1.) Provide foundational materials for the Leadership class to work with: a classroom tabletop colored printer/scanner/copier. Please note that this is a building year, as the WISE Center has never had a leadership class before. This class will serve as a journalism class/student council.
2) Create a safe storage space dedicated to the leadership class. The storage locker will house camera and video equipment, as well as projects/papers that students are working on.

What will be done with my students

This year our school has created a leadership class for the first time.
Students in the leadership class will:
1.) Take photos of the study body and special events.
2.) Tape/record special events happening on campus.
3.) Produce a monthly school newspaper.
4.) Produce an end-of-year school yearbook.
5.) Support teachers with projects that include, but are not limited to: Pre-K Trick-or-Treat, bulletin boards, organization of supplies, hallway decorations, etc.
6.) Research/Support fundraising with-in the school/community.

Benefits to my students

The entire student body will benefit from a school-wide monthly newsletter. Students at the WISE Center come together from across the county. Because we are so diverse and small, there are no sports teams to bring the students together and build school spirit and unity. The addition of a school newspaper (that will highlight student success/programs) will help bring our study body together. It will also encourage participation in events with-in the school and community. In addition, only 1 student yearbook has been created for the school in the past. The leadership class plans to create and expand a second yearbook this year. This will also give students an opportunity to feel school pride, as their photos and accomplishments will be highlighted.

Budget Narrative

1.) As the WISE Center is housed in an older/refurbished facility, there is no secure space to store camera/video equipment and special materials/projects that leadership class will be working on. A lockable storage cabinet will give students a dedicated space to protect and store their materials. Because it is metal, the locker should last for years to come. This is where most of the money will be spent.
2.) As this is the first year for this class, students are in need of equipment. The school will provide a desktop computer, but this grant will allow students to have access to their own classroom printer for printing and editing pages. Student productivity will be increased if students have access to a printer. Most of the remaining budget will be spent on the printer. Other items, such as an ink replacement cartridge and lock for the storage cabinet, will be purchased with the remaining grant balance.
