The St. Joe Community Foundation - $1,491.64
Our goal is to foster excitement in the fields of mathematics and science by providing opportunities for students to learn utilizing “hands-on” activities. Our proposal requests funding to obtain the basic hardware necessary to equip a Walton Academy Charter School Drone Team and Club.
The objective of the Drone Team and Drone Club program is to utilize real-life applications of mathematics and science representative of career fields in the 21st Century. Through the experiences with the Drone Team and Club students will improve comprehension and learn communication skills as part of a team where each member is valued and actively contributes to the overall success of the team. This initiative will be provide unique opportunities for approximately 600 students over the next four years to experience the excitement of being on an actual racing team while also applying their classroom learning to real life.
Science
From the science of flight to radio waves and material science, our school drone team and club will learn about and experiment with a variety of science concepts as they complete assigned tasks.
Technology
The drone team and club curriculum are designed specifically to provide a practical purpose for students to learn and create through the application of scientific knowledge.
Mathematics
They will learn to apply mathematics skills in a project-based program, creating lifelong connections and understanding for abstract ideas.
Walton Academy Charter School currently serves 168 at risk students in grades 6-12 with 59 percent having two or more indicators of being at risk. Additionally, 79 percent scored below average on the mathematics and science state assessments. Our school is an intensive, alternative academic program for the most vulnerable, at-risk students in Walton County School District. We strive to support every student’s growth socially, emotionally, and academically. The exposure of a child to 21st Century technology may ultimately propel the child to adopt academic goals to graduate into a world with ever changing demands in the job market (Reimaging the Role of Technology in Education, 2017). The Drone Team and Club will support that growth and development by promoting interest in and a passion for mathematics and science.
