Goal

Implement a Science Team and Science Club at Walton Academy Charter School to provide high-level, hands-on science lab activities, virtual labs, and demonstrations for all students.

What will be done with my students

Using the five senses, students become a part of the scientific process, ultimately increasing motivation, nurturing creativity, and improving state assessment scores and individual academic achievement. The Science Team and Science Club will meet weekly to explore scientific concepts and plan experiments to test their hypothesis. Activities such as dissecting plastic frogs, building rockets, and testing chemical reactions will excite students and encourage a lifelong love of science.

Benefits to my students

Our school is an intensive, alternative academic program for the most vulnerable, at-risk students in grades 6-12. We strive to support every student's growth socially, emotionally, and academically. A recent study by Albany University found students who have difficulty in the learning arena due to ESL barriers, auditory deficiencies, or behavioral interference. The students are on task more often whenever they are PART OF the learning process, not just spectators. Currently, Walton Academy Charter School students utilize a computer-based platform to complete course requirements. The Science Team and Science Club will provide all of our students with the opportunity to have hands-on experiences. Our science club and the science team will use all five senses to perform various experiments at the appropriate grade level to encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and experimentation.
The curriculum brings science to life while aligning with 92 percent of the Florida Next Generations Sunshine State Standards. The National Association for Career and Technical Education reports, "Curiosity and problem-solving are at the root of success in the professional world, not only in STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) but in all industries." Walton Academy Charter School currently serves 168 at-risk students in grades 6- 12, with 59 percent having two or more early warning indicators of being at risk. Additionally, 79 percent scored below average in science and mathematics on state assessments. Through real-world experiences with the science team and club, students will improve reading comprehension and learn communication skills as part of a team where each member is valued and actively contributes to the overall success.

Budget Narrative

Funds will purchase materials to equip a science lab with fun and engaging stations available to all students and teachers. Students will follow the scientific method to explore biology, chemistry, physics, earth and space science, engineering, and technology.
