Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 160

Access to books is a key strategy in helping students increase their reading proficiency.  Rich literature has the potential to engage students, encouraging them to read more and think critically to solve problems.  The grant that we received enabled us to purchase 180 books for students to use in their classrooms.  Students read the books individually, in small groups, and as a whole class.  Students learned a love for literature, stronger reading skills, more diverse vocabulary, comprehension, and communication skills during their literacy time.  We are certain this grant helped our students make gains in reading as evidenced on their FAST tests.  Thank you St. Joe Foundation for investing in our students.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of Readers are Leaders is to provide classroom sets of chapter books for fifth graders so students can be immersed in a classroom community of reading during novel studies.

What will be done with my students

These book sets will be used by fifth grade language arts teachers to share challenging and rich literature from our district approved book list with students. Students can read alone, with partners, and with the whole group and then discuss elements of literature and vocabulary found within the books. These books are greatly needed to enhance classroom instruction in language arts.

Benefits to my students

Studies show that reading 20 minutes or more daily positively impacts a child's success at school in all subject areas. We want to teach students to love reading while helping them improve critical thinking, comprehension, and vocabulary skills through great literature. If we receive this grant we will purchase classroom sets of novels that will increase student achievement through classroom reading.

Budget Narrative

The grant funds will be used to purchase 6 classroom sets of novels to be used by 5th grade language arts teachers. The total cost of this project is $1444.50.
