Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 172

Providing a rich variety of age appropriate books is a key strategy in helping students increase their reading proficiency.  Reading interesting and challenging books has the potential to engage students, encouraging them to read more and think critically to solve problems.  The grant that we received enabled us to purchase 134 books for students to use in their classrooms.  Students read the books individually, in small groups, and as a whole class.  Students learned a love for literature, stronger reading skills, more diverse vocabulary, comprehension, and communication skills during their literacy time.  We are certain this grant helped our students make gains in reading as evidenced on their STAR tests.  Thank you Alys Foundation for helping us buy these awesome books for our students.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal for Read to Succeed is to help our students increase vocabulary, comprehension skills, and to make them more successful readers by providing chapter book sets for second grade language arts teachers to share with students.

What will be done with my students

Students will use these chapter book sets in small groups and whole groups with the teachers' guidance and instruction to improve their reading skills in areas such as story elements, comprehension, analyzing, summarizing, and vocabulary skills. These books are selected from the Walton County recommended book list for students.

Benefits to my students

Research shows clearly that reading practice is an essential part of growing vocabulary and critical thinking skills to make successful students. Improving their reading skills will help students succeed in all areas of their educational journey and for years to come. If we receive this grant, we will use the ten classroom book sets listed to enhance our language arts instruction and help cultivate a love for reading in our students.

Budget Narrative

These funds will be used to purchase ten book sets. The total cost of this project is $1455.60.
