Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 180

My goal with this grant was to help students increase their reading proficiency by ordering new books for our fourth grade classrooms.  Rich literature has the potential to engage students, encouraging them to read more and think critically to solve problems.  The grant that we received enabled us to purchase 138 books for students to use in their classrooms.  Students read the books individually, in small groups, and as a whole class.  Students learned a love for literature, stronger reading skills, more diverse vocabulary, comprehension, and communication skills during their literacy time.  We are certain this grant helped our students make gains in reading as evidenced on their FAST tests.  Thank you St. Joe Community Foundation for helping our students improve their reading skills.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of Books Make Us Brilliant! is to provide sets of books for students to read in order to increase their proficiency in language arts and literacy.

What will be done with my students

Students will read as a whole class or in small group book clubs and discuss what they are reading. They will love sharing these novels with classmates. Fourth grade teachers will use these book sets to teach students story elements, summarizing, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. Through reading with peers, students will develop a love for reading and literacy. Stronger readers will achieve more in every subject area!

Benefits to my students

Research shows that daily reading practice and discussion helps students increase comprehension and grow cognitively. Our students will benefit greatly by reading with their classmates and analyzing characters and plots to gain a better understanding of the world around them. Their vocabulary and general knowledge will increase because of this additional reading practice. By improving their reading abilities, our students will perform better in all classes.

Budget Narrative

Using the grant, we would be able to purchase 7 classroom sets of books to be shared by fourth grade language arts teachers. The total cost of this project is $1405.99.
