Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 111

We were able to attain nearly 100 books written in Spanish.  This was a special opportunity for our ESL (English as a second language) students.  Many of our students are bilingual when they read, as well as speak.  For those who continue practicing both languages, it means a lot to them to be able to find a book written in Spanish.  They were so excited that they were asking if we had even more Spanish books.  I can't measure the success of this grant with data, but I can measure the success in the obvious joy it brought to them and helped them feel like they're also a part of our wonderful community.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to increase reading engagement amongst our English Language Learners.

What will be done with my students

I will be purchasing popular book titles in Spanish for our English Language Learning students. Right now, their selection of books written in Spanish is lacking. Many of these students prefer to read books in their native language, even after they become more fluent in English. In addition to their regular library time, I will schedule extra visits so they can stay continuously engaged. These books will remain in the library for years to come to any incoming ELL students may enjoy this collection.

Benefits to my students

Not only will more Spanish books help our ELL students feel included, but they have a better chance at being successful readers when they can read in their native language. The goal is for all 111 students to become more engaged.
