Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 16

I plan on using games to help students face and problem solve situations with topics like honesty, bullying and manners. The games will also provide opportunities to make good decisions and an opportunity for teamwork.

Some of my students have sensory issues and I have chosen items to help these students. Some of the sensory items will be used for play and letter recognition. Seating will give some students the ability to sit or move in a full range of movement and the stability they need to wobble or bounce without tipping over. One item I choose is to calm students down. Students will learn calming strategies to help them take mental breaks and to improve their mindsets and help them learn to regulate their emotions.

Conversation starters allow students to talk about their feelings, ideas, dreams and this will allow me to make more student connections. Building relationships and connections between my students and myself is imperative for learning to take place.

When students are overwhelmed and can't find the words the emotion cards will help students identify their feelings and describe the reasons behind the way they are feeling. This will help my younger students who cannot put their feelings into words and allows me to have conversations about their emotions and why they are feeling the way they do.

All of the items will be used throughout the year. My students have yearly goals and accommodations that I must provide for my students to be successful.

Impact:  I used the social/emotional games to initiate conversations with students that I serve for social and emotional support.  Some of the "games" were puzzles that allowed my K students to match appropriate responses to scenerios and the games provided thought provoking responses to many different kinds of sitiuations..kindness, empathy, and consequences to actions.  Playing the games with my older students allowed us to also delve into deeper conversations about their actions for the day, things that have happened in their life, and even personal experiences.   I built relationships with some students to the point that they wanted to come more than their appointed days.

The seating I chose has been a success.  The students walk in and choose what works best for them.  Of course I had to put rules in place.  I have provided teachers with a wobble cushion for the student to keep in class. The student uses it when needed.

The impact of the seating and social/emotional games has been a huge benefit to help support my students. Thank you for supporting special education services!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of differentiated instruction is to ensure that all students are engaged in the learning process by providing tasks or an environment that matches each individual's needs. Whether it be social and emotional learning or sensory processing needs.

What will be done with my students

Benefits to my students

The activities I have selected to help my students (8 Kindergarteners and 8 Fourth graders) thrive socially and emotionally will help my students set goals, show empathy and ask for help. When students have limited social-emotional skills, they are more likely to struggle when they face a new challenge or conflict. Teaching solutions will make a significant positive impact for my students. The sensory items I have chosen hopefully will increase tolerance for non-preferred activities, decrease outbursts or demonstrate an ability to self-regulate their emotions. I teach a range of ages and grades and the items I have chosen will benefit different age groups, abilities, exceptionalities and accommodations.

Budget Narrative

I am a new ESE teacher and I building a classroom to support my students and their exceptional needs. All of the items I have chosen are to help with their accommodations. They are all chosen from Lakeshore and I have read the reviews and I have chosen items with high reviews and recommendations.
