Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 45

Through this non-fiction grant, Seaside Neighborhood School students now have access to a variety of high interest non-fiction texts. Students read for pleasure as well as for research in which they share their findings with their peers. Giving this type of choice is highly motivating and helps balance time spent reading fiction vs. non-fiction. Thank you so much for the gift of a good book!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Most of what we read as adults is for information. Most of what students read is fictional. It is time to bridge the gap and bring engaging non-fiction into the classroom library. Students 5th-8th will have access to check out factual books on various interesting topics.

What will be done with my students

While these books can be read for pleasure, they will also be used for students to conduct passion-type projects. Students will choose any topic they would like to learn more about and share multimedia presentations with their classmates. This is a high interest way to motivate students to read and synthesize more non-fiction.

Benefits to my students

A measurable outcome of this project will be an increase in non-fiction reading comprehension. Increased exposure to expository texts will have a positive effect on FAST test scores. This not only will impact this year's students, but students for years to come.
