Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 6

The materials that were obtained through the grant were used to help build fine motor skills along with building students' math and science learning objectives. 6/6 students can match the same shapes and colors. 4/6 can pick up the shape or color that is asked. The students will practice their skills independently. Students are engaging more with each other during center times as well. They are excited to explore the items that are on their cognitive level but are still challenging to them to build their skills.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students’ that are neuro-divergent with diagnoses such as autism or down syndrome, need to have the opportunity to use materials that are on their cognitive level that support the in meeting their mathematical, literacy, social studies, and science benchmarks/standards, but also build their fine motor, and social-emotional benchmarks/standards. Students must be able to access these materials in a way that is physical possible for them. Shelves and other classroom organization options can sometimes be overwhelming for these students, along with not meeting these students’ needs. This grants goal will provide students with materials that are on their cognitive level. It is important so they can build upon their benchmarks/standards along with helping to meet their IEP goals.

What will be done with my students

With this grant I will use the shelves with bins to give student access to learning materials that they can take to a table or carpet to practice their skills independently. Student will use specific items such as Lego Duplo items to build their own community, which I will provide images of community helpers and buildings that will be displayed to support them in their social studies benchmarks/standards. This will also encourage students to build their social-emotional skills through working together. I will use the materials to meet specific IEP goals with working one-on-one to provide quality and individual education that is specific to that student’s needs. Other items will target specific benchmarks/standards to help the students grow and develop their abilities in all the eight benchmark/standard areas that are divided by cognitive levels.

Benefits to my students

The benefits to my students are that these materials will provide them the ability to practice skills that are needed to hit their benchmarks/standards, as well as, their IEP goals. The materials provide them to practice these skills in a way that is meets their cognitive levels and in a fun way that will encourage them to continue to come back to practice their skills.
