Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 90

Communication boards have been installed on playgrounds within school (four areas) for use within play, peer interactions, requesting, and making comments during recess and outside time. These boards have changed interactions within play time of student's school day. Non-speaking students are independently utilizing communication boards with pointing and bringing peers over to board to engage in play! 

 

Sensory items have been utilized for sensory regulation with each student for increased communication and ability to engage in school activities/learning. All student have expressed favorite item to be water bubble tube with floating fish and color changing lights to increase their calmness and ability to engage in activities. Feeling binder has been completed with explicit teaching of emotions and calming/regulating strategies for their bodies to receive and process information.

Goal

Implementing communication board and sensory items within student's school day will increase abilities of participation, learning classroom material, and engaging with peers/adults.  

 

What will be done with my students

Communication boards will be installed on playgrounds within school (four areas) for use within play, peer interactions, requesting, and making comments during recess and outside time. Sensory items will be utilized for sensory regulation with each student for increased communication and ability to engage in school activities/learning.  

 

Benefits to my students

Students with communication disabilities/difficulties will be able to communicate utilizing picture boards placed in playground areas to further engage with peers, communicate wants/needs/ideas, and make requests. Sensory items will increase the students ability to regulate their sensory system to be able to engage in peer/adult interactions, receive information, and attend structured activities.  

 

Budget Narrative

Items listed and material to install requested items.
Vinyl signs will be installed for use of all students in the area for communication.
The nugget is a cushion item that can be used as building items as a play fort, as a sofa, and used for sensory regulation with climbing.
The water bubble tube is for visual input for sensory regulation.
Liquid fusion tiles are use during sensory regulation for pushing/pressing and visual feedback for regulation of the student.
Hexagon lights are an additional visual input for sensory system.
Unbreakable mirror is for visual feedback of facial expressions, communication, and body awareness skills.
Wood posts and attachment material estimated cost to install communication signs on playgrounds.

Sensory area to be assembled within classroom for 90 students to benefit from daily.
