Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 12

The primary goal is to instill safety and independent living skills in students at a variety of levels by promoting real-life language and Math skills through Environmental Print curriculums with engaging visuals and manipulatives. These materials will also enhance reading and language skills.

Students have already shown growth in finding menu items, totals and change due for item. 5 Students have taken these skills further and have begun to add sales tax/tip to the totals as well. The outcomes of these programs will not show up in state test scores, rather real-life activities such as eating out and at restaurant/retail jobs. 2 students have jobs where they use these skills in real-life and these programs have helped build those skills.

The Environmental Print program took a little longer to come in so our experience with it is limited at this time. Students have enjoyed reading the stories and learning safety signs beyond the the typical Stop and Go. In addition, the students are using real life scenarios to sequence events, retell stories and answer a variety of questions. These activities are engaging and relevant.

What will be done with my students

Using this visually appealing curriculum, the speech therapist and I will work together to engage students in comprehensive, standards-based language arts and math curriculum for students with significant cognitive disabilities. Specifically, we will teach students a variety of safety signs and how to safely use them. In addition, we will teach students a variety of real-life language and Math skills that are required in everyday life, to prepare students to live independently and safely. These real-life lessons will help compel students to master the skills needed for everyday life experiences.

Benefits to my students

Students will use the manipulatives, posters and flashcards to practice reading and using a variety of real life vocabulary including safety signs, menus, and other practical math applications. Due to the visually appealing and relatable materials at a variety of levels, all students in my classroom will be engaged and successful in the learning process. These materials will help improve reading, math, and social skills in students with severe and moderate disabilities.
