Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 528

This project introduced 2nd, 4th, and 5th-grade students to the Theremin and Chladni Plates, emphasizing hands-on exploration and integration with Orff Schulwerk principles. Students engaged in active listening, experimentation with sound, and collaborative composition, culminating in exploration using GarageBand to enhance their creations digitally. Future cross-curricular extensions include art projects and S.T.E.M. activities in the fall.

Based on the data collected through formative assessment, it's evident that students have achieved the learning objectives outlined in the lesson plan. They understood the Theremin and Chladni Plates' unique characteristics and their integration with Orff Schulwerk principles. Students applied their knowledge, utilizing the Theremin and Chladni Plates to manipulate pitch, volume, and visual patterns.

Furthermore, students exhibited proficiency in integrating rhythmic and melodic elements using Orff instruments, showcasing their ability to collaborate within groups to develop cohesive musical compositions. Incorporating technology, specifically GarageBand, enhanced their creative process and fostered connections between music and S.T.E.A.M. education.

Students demonstrated a deeper understanding of the interdisciplinary connections between music, science, and technology through cross-curricular extensions such as art projects and S.T.E.M. activities. Overall, the session's outcome indicates that students have met and exceeded the intended learning objectives, showcasing their critical thinking, creativity, and mastery of musical concepts aligned with Florida State Standards for Music Education.

Moving forward, more students will experience and explore the science of sound as we scaffold the student experience for different grade levels. We appreciate your support!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our primary goal is to help kids in Kindergarten through 5th Grade discover the enchanting links between music, art, and science.

What will be done with my students

This project will engage students in a captivating exploration of sound, science, and art. We’ll introduce them to the Theremin, an instrument used on several Sci-Fi film scores, allowing them to experience the magic of music created without physical contact. Students will also delve into the mesmerizing world of Chladni plates, producing intricate artistic patterns through vibration. We will then connect the Theremin and the Chladni plates to create a unique Sci-Fi inspired art project.

Benefits to my students

We will evaluate the success of our project through the following measurable outcomes:
Our kindergarten through 2nd grade will be a guided experience and students engagement we'll be measure by:
- How our students engage and explore music and science.
- Their creativity, shown in their artwork.
- Observing how well they do in different activities.

With our 3rd through 5th grade students we'll measure our success by:
- Improved knowledge of sound and its scientific principles.
- Enhanced creative skills, demonstrated through artistic projects.
- Observable asseessment and feedback from students.
