Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 5

The Sensory Seating and Crash Pad has significantly impacted my classroom in a positive way! As a result of your funding, I have been able to create a more effective "Calm Area" in my classroom, that enables students to "self regulate". When a student is feeling stressed or upsent, then they can "choose" to go to the "Calm Area" to "take a break". The calm area has a big, soft crash pad, pillows, weighted blankets and fidgets available to help the student regulate themselves.

Previously, a student would take approximately 15 to 30 minutes to regulate themselves; however, adding the sensory items to the Calm Area, students are able to regulate in approximately five to ten minutes. This means that students are missing less instructional time!

Also, students are able to "earn" time in the Calm Area by making good choices. Earning time in the "Calm Area" allows all students to benefit from the item purchased.

Lastly, the alternative seating, funded by your grant, has enabled students the flexibility to "have a choice" with which seating they want for the day or for each task. The alternative seating helps students who perform better when they have continuous movement, such as rocking. The weighted vest and other sensory items are all used daily and have been a great addition in helping improve the learning environment.

Thank you!
