Walton Education Foundation

I would like to cultivate a lifelong love of reading in my classroom through the use of books, props and activities that will help prepare my students for their educational career. To quote Dr. Seuss: "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!" Picture books bring numerous benefits to students as they begin to develop their reading skills. These benefits include building language skills, identifying sequences of events, improving comprehension, and boosting social and emotional learning. But the learning doesn't stop there! They will also gain math skills, expand their vocabulary, learn about the world around them, visit places far away, and improve their imagination and creativity. This grant will help provide books and materials related to the stories to help facilitate the hands-on learning I use with my students. These resources will be available for other teachers at Bay School to use in their classrooms as well.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 14

At the beginning of the year, I assessed my students on letter identification and sound identification. Throughout the year as we learned the 26 letters of the alphabet and their sounds, I used the books and manipulatives to help reinforce their learning. The students had fun reading the books at center time after having them read aloud during story time. They were able to retell the stories in their own words. After teaching all 26 letters of the alphabet, I reassessed the students and every student increased their letter/sound knowledge by at least 5 letters and/or sounds. This will give them a sound start as they enter kindergarten. Prekindergarten students learn in many different ways. The books and manipulatives I was able to purchase helped me reach the audirtory and kinesthetic learners. Thank You so much for helping me make learning fun!

Story Retelling

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

The Pre-K curriculum, World of Wonders, builds a strong foundation for early literacy and identifies a letter each week to focus on. I will use books related to the letter, along with props and activities to help increase their alphabet knowledge and emergent reading and writing skills. The students will be able to retell and extend the stories as they also build and maintain relationships with their peers.

Benefits to my students

By May 2024 and using a teacher developed assessment, students will increase their alphabet knowledge by 10 letters, thus helping prepare them for kindergarten. They will answer not only wh- questions but also higher order thinking questions related to stories read to them. Students will be able to identify the parts of a book, including author and illustrator. Through this, I hope to have fostered a lifelong love of reading.
