Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 178

Each of the 3rd grade ELA teachers allowed students to work on either a narrative story or research for an informational text. Students had to follow 3rd grade standards and use the essay outline to create their own booklet. Students typed up their story or research on Google classroom. Preparation, practice, and testing for the Florida standardized testing interrupted the illustration and publication process.  With a month left of school, students will have ample time to complete this writing activity. Our school media specialist has agreed to bar code their booklets for student check-out next year making our students feel like real authors!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Creating an Authentic Bound and Illustrated student created Book containing their final edit of a narrative story, expository essay, or how-to instructional piece.

What will be done with my students

We want our students to embark on an exciting journey where they will become authors and illustrators! Our Florida writing standards require students to plan, organize, write, edit, revise AND PUBLISH their own writing. With help from the grant our students will experience the final stage in the creation of an authentic bound and illustrated book.
The first task is to understand the writing process from start to finish. Students will move through the entire writing process starting with planning a story. Once they have completed all the required steps with their written story and their illustrations are complete, it's time to assemble and bind the book. The goal is to create a professional-looking book that others will enjoy reading. By making our own books, students can express their creativity and imagination, sharing thoughts and experiences with others, while also solidifying a love for writing!

Benefits to my students

The benefit of creating a finished piece is to honor the students' hard work through the writing process. As teachers, we often spend hours, days, and sometimes weeks planning, writing, and editing an essay or story. The final stage shows off that hard work and encourages students to fall in love with the beautiful results of the writing process.
The final task is to have students share their creations with others and celebrate their finished book! They can read their book aloud to classmates, family, or friends. We can even create a special author's corner in our classrooms where students can display their works of art for others to enjoy.
