Walton Education Foundation

The goal is to introduce my 2nd graders to STEM activities and engineering opportunities using Cubelet Robots. These autonomous robot-cubes will teach students basic robotics and programming that will better equip them to compete in the global society with the tools necessary to prepare them for the 21st Century. Providing students with STEM activities and engineering opportunities will benefit the students immediate and long term by exercising their thinking strategies and developing higher-order questioning and problem-solving techniques.

What will be done with my students

I will integrate and teach weekly basic robotics and programming lessons in my STEM class. These lessons will support Engineering Design standards for my 36 second grade students. They will interact, produce, and design new robots with the Cubelet Robots. My students will explore with these unique cubes and discover the cubes have different functionalities.

They will explore with three types of cubes:
• Input sensors: cubes used to obtain data from the environment.
• Actuators: cubes used to execute movements.
• Thinkers: cubes to implement a computation.

Benefits to my students

Cubelets are a unique piece of educational technology specifically suited to developing critical thinking objectives and engineering skills. Cubelets will give ALL my students years of opportunities to build intuitions about complex systems, computer science, and robotics. This exposure will help my students score proficiency on the science standards and help to increase:
• Motivation measured by observation
• Hands on learning measured by active engagement
• STEM learning measured by performance of students engineering robotic designs.
Research proves engagement with practice and time devoted to STEM materials boosts proficiency in the science and math content areas. Proficiency rate for my 36 students on science standards currently hovers around 75%. The proficiency rate of students can be greatly increased by the acquisition of these STEM materials used to manipulate and explore STEM topics. The year end goal is 95% of my students to master science standards with the help of the Cubelets Discovery set and the Cubelets Boundless Builder Pack. This will be measured by student test scores and student participation.

Budget Narrative

The total for this purchase would be $941.31. This total includes one Cubelets Discovery set and one Cubelets Boundless Builder Pack. These sets will be a perfect way to introduce STEM, robotics, and computational thinking to my 2nd graders. All materials will be sustained through the years as they will be an integral part of the 2nd grade curriculum.
