What will be done with my students

Students will use the school supplies on the list below to create foldables. These are visual reminders for the students of things they are learning. For example, they have An Interactive Poetry Notebook. In this are definitions of poetry terms as well as examples of them. This helps the students have a visual reminder of what each term is as they apply that learning to new poetry.
The table and whiteboard easels will be used with students in small groups. During AVID, students have tutorials where they get help with problems and they work together to solve them. The writing of the problem out (usually math problems) helps them to see each step and potentially where mistakes are made.
The table will also be used in other small groups - where students are reading the same book together or practicing reading, writing, or listening. The small group approach with ELLs is better than always having a large group lesson. I am more able to control the support/differentiation that I provide in small groups.

Benefits to my students

My students will benefit by intentional grouping of students with like-abilities in order to reach them where they are in learning English as their second language. Students are more likely to speak and practice English in small groups versus in the whole class setting. The whiteboard easels will be used for students to collaborate and work together. It is proven that intentional practice will strengthen their acquisition of English as their second language. While in small groups they will also use their Vocabulary Notebook, another foldable, (during Reading) for practice with roots, prefixes, and suffixes. The materials will be used for students to put their notebooks together. When they do hands-on activities, they tend to retain the information better.
