What will be done with my students

First Lego League is a company that organizes and sponsors students in grades K-12 to work together building and coding robots. Our school Lego Club works together to solve a real-world problem(s) allowing students to develop team building and research skills as well as skills they will use throughout their lives.

An application process selected 40 students for our school's Lego Club. Teams meet weekly with coaches to research, discuss, solve, and build solutions to an assigned problem each year from FIRST Lego League. FIRST sets the limit of 6 students per Explore team. If awarded, these robotic kits, will be used with these 40 students as well as the many students who will enter our school Lego Club for years to come. The 1st-4th FIRST Lego Explore teams would benefit greatly from the use of these robotics as they will be stronger coders and builders which will empower them to have an edge when they reach the 5th grade FIRST Lego League Challenge team which is much more competitive. To have a successful year our teams need team shirts, event swag to share with other school teams, and materials to create a display board for the Explore Festival. These teams work to build the season challenge then program/code their build. These teams will have one challenge they will build and code as a team; they will also have individual projects which is stemmed from their research of this year’s challenge: “Submerged: exploration of the ocean’s habitats and life. In April 2025, the team will present their projects to interviewers, parents, and friends at the FIEST Lego League Explore Festival.

The mission of FIRST® (Lego League) is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. The program is built around theme-based challenges to engage children ages 6 to 16 in research, problem solving, coding, and engineering. The foundation of the program is the FIRST® Core Values, which emphasize teamwork, discovery, and innovation, impact, inclusion and fun. Students emerge more confident, excited, and equipped with the skills they need in a changing workforce. -firstinspires.org

Benefits to my students

Benefits to my students:
FIRST LEGO League’s positive impact in student's lives is supported by data. Over 87% are more interested in doing well in school, and 88% have more interest in attending college.
Student's that are exposed to STEM content at the elementary level develop long lasting interest. Furthermore, many career paths for these students are in STEM related fields.
