Walton Education Foundation

My goal is to make my AP Statistics and Dual Enrollment College Algebra available to all students regardless of financial ability by having TI-84 graphing calculators available in my classroom. Each year we have students that would like to take these courses, but cannot afford to buy a graphing calculator that is required for those classes. Removing the financial burden for students will allow them to be able to take the advanced math courses they need so they are prepared to solve the types of math problems they are going to face in life after high school.

What will be done with my students

This year I have more students that need a calculator than I have available. I will immediately be able to accommodate those students upon approval of this grant if awarded.

Benefits to my students

These calculators will not only drastically improve performance in my classes for each student who is managing with old, shared, or no calculators, but will also allow less classroom time to be devoted to finding, sharing, and “fixing” calculators and more instructional time for all the students in the class to learn and develop. Eventually I would like to obtain a class set of thirty TI-84 graphing calculators. At that time, I would be able to load programs onto the calculators prior to class, which would give us even more instructional time and would ensure that everyone has the same data. Over the years, I have bought some older models of this calculator that I loan out but sometimes the older calculators will not take new programs so I look forward to eventually phasing those out and replacing them with the TI 84’s as well.

Budget Narrative

We are hoping you would be able to fund the purchase of ten TI 84 Graphing Calculators for $1358 with a docking station. Each calculator is about $130 and will affect the ability of one student in each of my four math classes each day for years to come.
