Walton Education Foundation

I have noticed that in recent years, there is a lot of academic pressure placed on 3, 4 and 5 year olds. They are being asked to sit at a desk, use writing utensils and memorize the alphabet and spell words, not to mention memorize math facts and complete story problems. Research has shown that before students can sit at a desk and perform these activities, they need to develop fine and large motor skills.
My goal is to help my students understand that it is OK to make mistakes. In fact, Albert Einstein believed that making mistakes is an important part of the learning process. Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Creativity and Innovation concepts help to better prepare students to meet the demands of technology in the world around them. These concepts are more hands-on, which allow students to learn from their mistakes, making the learning so much more personal.

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

What will be done with my students

Using small group, center time, and large group activities, I will prepare lessons for my class to explore hands-on. Instead of following step by step instructions, I will guide my students to explore and make mistakes. And then explore some more to learn from their/our mistakes. I also plan on inviting parents to our classroom throughout the year to explore with us. I will investigate ways to have Family Night activities for each of the STEAM concepts.

Benefits to my students

My passion as a preschool teacher is to establish a lifelong love for learning. And STEAM learning does just that, along with many other benefits. They build confidence and self esteem as they master fine motor skills, using tools and utensils. I will encourage them to use their observation skills to help analize and predict outcomes. I will nurture creativty as I encourage my students to think outside the box. They will improve their communication skills as they explore and experiment with new concepts and tools. As they are introduced to new textures, smells and situations they develop positive connections, aiding in sensory development.

Budget Narrative
