Walton Education Foundation

Many students struggle with foundational skills in both math and digital literacy, which are essential for long-term academic success. Kindergarten students often need additional support in building early number sense, problem-solving, and confidence in math. Similarly, fourth and fifth grade students must strengthen their keyboarding and typing fluency to effectively access online learning platforms, demonstrate knowledge on digital assessments, and prepare for future academic and career demands.

This project seeks to address these needs by implementing Math Seeds in Kindergarten to build a strong foundation in mathematics through engaging, individualized instruction, and Keyboarding Without Tears in fourth and fifth grades to increase typing speed and accuracy while reinforcing digital readiness.

Objectives:

Kindergarten students will demonstrate measurable growth in number sense, operations, and problem-solving through regular use of Math Seeds.

Fourth and fifth grade students will improve typing fluency, accuracy, and stamina, enabling them to more efficiently complete digital assignments and assessments.

Across grade levels, students will gain confidence, independence, and proficiency in core academic and digital skills that directly impact classroom achievement and standardized test performance.

By meeting these objectives, the project will close skill gaps, improve student achievement, and better prepare students for academic success in the upper grades.

What will be done with my students

Fall 2025 (Implementation):

Launch Math Seeds in Kindergarten classrooms with 3–4 sessions per week to build foundational math skills.

Introduce Keyboarding Without Tears in 4th and 5th grades, with regular practice sessions incorporated into instructional schedules.

Begin collecting usage data and student performance reports.

Winter 2025 (Progress Monitoring):

Review mid-year student progress data from both programs.

Adjust instructional practices based on student needs (e.g., additional support for struggling learners).

Conduct mid-year typing fluency checks for grades 4–5.

Spring 2026 (Evaluation):

Continue consistent use of programs in all designated grade levels.

Collect final program data reports and compare to baseline measures.

Evaluate student gains in math proficiency (Kindergarten) and typing fluency/accuracy (grades 4–5).

Gather teacher feedback on program impact and effectiveness.

End of 2025–26 School Year:

Summarize program results, including student growth, achievement gains, and teacher input.

Share outcomes with administration and staff to inform decisions for future program use.

Benefits to my students

This project will directly support student achievement by strengthening both foundational math skills and digital literacy. Kindergarten students will benefit from Math Seeds through personalized lessons that adapt to their level, reinforcing number sense, operations, and problem-solving in an engaging format. This will build confidence and readiness for future math instruction.

Fourth and fifth grade students will benefit from Keyboarding Without Tears by developing essential typing fluency, accuracy, and stamina. Improved keyboarding skills will allow students to more efficiently demonstrate their knowledge on digital assignments and assessments, reducing barriers caused by slow or inaccurate typing. This will increase academic performance across all subject areas where technology is used.

Measurement and Evaluation:

Student progress in Math Seeds will be monitored through built-in reports tracking mastery of math concepts, growth in number sense, and time on task.

Typing speed and accuracy in Keyboarding Without Tears will be measured at the start, midpoint, and end of the program to document improvement.

Classroom performance and assessment data will be compared before and after implementation to evaluate gains in student proficiency and confidence.

By targeting these specific needs, this project will close skill gaps, improve achievement, and better prepare students for academic success in future grades.

Budget Narrative

The requested funds will be used to purchase site licenses for Math Seeds (Kindergarten) and Keyboarding Without Tears (grades 4–5). These digital programs provide structured, research-based support that directly addresses identified student needs in early mathematics and digital literacy.

Math Seeds licenses will ensure all Kindergarten students have access to engaging, adaptive math instruction that builds number sense, operations, and problem-solving skills. This investment supports the project goal of improving math proficiency and preparing students for future success in upper grades.

Keyboarding Without Tears licenses will provide fourth and fifth grade students with structured practice in typing fluency and accuracy. By reducing barriers caused by slow or inaccurate typing, students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge more effectively on digital assignments and assessments across all subject areas.

The purchase of these licenses represents the most cost-effective method of supporting student achievement because the programs provide individualized instruction, progress monitoring, and measurable outcomes. No additional materials or equipment are required, ensuring that all funds directly impact student learning.
