Our Classroom Garden

Dune Lakes Elementary School

My goal for my class is to create impactful educational opportunities that engage my students with their natural world and enable them to make healthy choices. With the Hands-on learning garden like the Lettuce Grow Farmstand, we can use these powerful tools to spark curiosity, improve childhood nutrition and create life-long healthy eating habits. When students have a hand in growing fruits and vegetables, they are more likely to try them, enjoy them and inspire other kids to do the same. Additionally, kids who grow up enjoying fruits and vegetables are more likely to continue eating them through adulthood.

Communication Devices for ESE Students

Freeport Elementary

My goal would be for my ESE students to have access to devices that can help them to build their functional and academic communication skills. I would like for my students to use devices to increase in academic and social communication by using communication programs and viewing sign language videos. I hope to decrease behaviors due to students not being able to communicate or not being understood by their teachers and peers.

Exceptional Students Plus Technology = Progress

Walton Intensity School of Excellence

Reading literacy is the end all; be all for life and in school. Being able to read well helps students and their families to break out of the generational poverty cycle. If you are a good reader, your chance of getting a good paying job increases exponentially. Helping our students who are struggling readers at the WISE Center is one of the most pivotal challenges we face as educators today. Due to the use of technology in our student's lives today, it makes sense to approach this with technology. We would like to heighten our students’ interest in literacy with supplementary technology and resources for whole group and small group instruction.
By the conclusion of this school year, we would like to see a 15% increase in mastery of our student's reading skills such as comprehension, fluency, and decoding of literature. This will include stories, news articles, poetry, and dramas as tested by the FAST ELA/Reading test.

Classroom iPads

Maude Saunders Elementary

My goal is to provide my students who do not communicate well or can't verbalize any response, but are able touch to respond, the opportunities in the classroom that will enable them to become successful communicators for the rest of their lives with a device that will enhance and ensure success in and out of the classroom. Also, the goal is to increase receptive and expressive language in the classroom when working on their classwork that requires the utilization of technology to answer or advocate for themselves. The iPads will be used on a daily basis and will have a great impact on ensuring increased communication of what they know, what they can learn and express needs as they will regularly use technology for the rest of their lives. iPad's will decrease frustration, anxiety, and other behaviors when it comes to the traditional pencil and paper tasks, allowing them more opportunities to reach IEP goals, as well personal goals.
The technology programs the school district has for their curriculum is available on newer versions of technology devices. Laptops increase frustration and confusion for student who can only respond by pointing or touching. The keyboard on a computer is a distraction for our non-verbal students and limits their attention to learning. Also, the device offers guided access to ensure students will not wander off from the programs or curriculum or touch buttons that are not part of the lesson. The programs on the devices that students will be using on a daily basis will be individualized to meet each student's needs and offer them to work at their individualized pace. For example, students who are considered to be below grade level will be assigned material based on the skills that they need to be successful, with opportunities to have repeated practice on a device that can provide automatic feedback and limit distractibility.

Offering student-designed, project-based opportunities to expand traditional learning

Freeport High School

Over the last 4 years, our Agritechnology Program has developed an outdoor classroom using a traditional garden setting that has 5 raised beds and a small greenhouse which are used to grow a variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. This garden area allows students to take their traditional learning outside to the garden and learn about the Vegetable and Nursery Industries as they work towards career and technical certifications in these fields. After four years, we now have a diverse group of students using these resources, from first year students to fourth year students. As students work in the garden, they are restricted to what other classes have done in years past. The basics are there, but as their knowledge grows, they recognize that there are ways to improve the efficiency of their time, our space, and the production of the garden. The ability to improve the garden systems (irrigation, space, aesthetics, and even our enjoyment of the garden) results in this request for funding.

Be the BEST Readers: Reading across Genres with Florida Books

Van R Butler Elementary

Florida wants its students to be the BEST readers they can be. We can get them there with a little help from books on the list of approved books from the state. These books provide a wide array of informational reading texts that students can explore vis a vis the Florida BEST Language Arts standards and benchmarks. These will be excellent tools for the fourth grade language arts teachers to help students meet these standards/benchmarks.
The fourth grade language arts teachers are responsible for teaching a wide range of reading skills. Among these are important skills that are utilized across reading genres – in all types of texts. To teach these skills, it is helpful to have specific types of texts. These skills include two in particular that the first progress monitoring assessment showed fourth graders were low in - comparative reading (comparing different accounts of the same event) and paraphrasing/summarizing.
In addition to being good choices for these two reading skills, the books purchased through this grant will complement the materials currently utilized by the district to add diversity to the types and levels of text so that students can be remediated and extended where appropriate. The books dovetail nicely with the social studies curriculum as well and aid in teaching the content/skills required in fourth grade social studies. In addition, the books will help students build important background knowledge that improves reading comprehension.

Help me create a Spanish Library for our school!

Seacoast Collegiate High School

As a second language learner myself, I find that true learning happens beyond classroom instruction, it happens when we put our learning into practice through speaking, reading and writing and enjoy it!. For that reason, building our Spanish Library has two goals:

1. Teach Spanish through Literacy and differentiation. I want students to love learning Spanish. Providing books for structured reading time and free-reading at various levels is an amazing way to reach each student where they are.

2. Inclusivity through Literacy. To help Heritage Spanish speakers connect with their mother tongue and culture. This student population spends most of their school day speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English. Many of our students are fluent in speaking and listening, but cannot read or write very well. For that reason, it is so important that as a school, we strengthen their literacy skills in their mother tongue as it sets them up for success with their English literacy.

Empowering Essentials: Enhancing ELA Instruction

Walton High School

With this funding 125 Walton High School sophomores will have the basic tools they need to master the fundamentals of close reading and critical thinking. Last year, English departments throughout the district were challenged to find, vet, and implement texts and materials that better aligned with the rigor and complexity of the new B.E.S.T standards. As the Walton High School tenth grade ELA team develops and implements lessons from these resources, we must often create and copy pieces of texts for close reading and annotations, graphic organizers, and guided notes. For my students to learn and practice the skills needed to read a text closely and critically, they must physically engage with the pages, writing notes, marking for language, creating visuals, and identifying questions and areas for further exploration. Because the new text sets are not consumables the way the old textbooks were, materials must be copied for each student, and, as you know, paper is at premium for teachers. This grant will allow me to purchase additional paper as well as sticky notes, annotation tabs, index cards, and highlighters so my students can become active and engaged readers and learners.

Butler Bears Back the Beach

Van R Butler Elementary

Our school is located a quarter mile from the beach, yet with as much waste as we accrue from people who reside here and people who visit here, we are not doing our part as a community in recycling. Landfills are where most of our waste goes due to there being a severe lack of recycling abilities in our county and landfills are not only unhealthy for the environment, but also for us to breathe in the air around us. Recycling is such a crucial contribution for everyone, and to be able to instill understanding into elementary students is a great place to start. Walton County does not provide recycling for its residents, unless they relocate the recycling on their own. Due to the lack of recycling capabilities, many of our students don’t truly know the impact recycling has on the planet. By bringing recycling to our school, we will provide education on why it is important and the impacts that it has. The goal for this grant, is to be able to bring light to the importance of recycling and teach our students not only how and what to recycle, but provide opportunities for them to see first-hand, how recycling impacts our community and local environment.

We have created a teacher formative assessment that consists of 25 questions that address each Florida standard to prepare out students for the next grade level. We believe that through hands on experiences, individualized instruction and one on one support that our students can improve and master the appropraite standards to score at or above expectations on the assessment. Currently, we only have about 5% who are at or exceeding expectations on our math assessment. Let's Make Mistakes

Bay School

I have noticed that in recent years, there is a lot of academic pressure placed on 3, 4 and 5 year olds. They are being asked to sit at a desk, use writing utensils and memorize the alphabet and spell words, not to mention memorize math facts and complete story problems. Research has shown that before students can sit at a desk and perform these activities, they need to develop fine and large motor skills.
My goal is to help my students understand that it is OK to make mistakes. In fact, Albert Einstein believed that making mistakes is an important part of the learning process. Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Creativity and Innovation concepts help to better prepare students to meet the demands of technology in the world around them. These concepts are more hands-on, which allow students to learn from their mistakes, making the learning so much more personal.

Struggling readers at the WISE Center are our number 1 focus. Difficulty reading causes struggles in all subjects. We would like to enhance our students impression of reading. This will enable them to learn to love reading or at least to work harder at it. Students today are very distracted by technology; movement will help calm that down.
By the end of this school year, we would like to see a 15% increase in mastery of our students reading skills such as fluency, decoding, and comprehension of literature. This includes newspapers, magazines, poetry, dramas, and stories (fictional/non-fictional) as tested by the FAST ELA/Reading test.

ELEVATE

South Walton High School

The ELEVATE Leadership Program is designed to strengthen student-athletes’ ability to lead, communicate, and stay accountable—skills that directly translate into the classroom and across campus.

Need: Many student-athletes are placed into leadership roles on their teams or among their peers without structured training. As coaches, we often find that these student-athletes are not equipped for these leadership roles. The issues these young people face within their teams could be poor body language, conflict, or misplaced priorities, that not only affect athletics but also spill into the learning environment.

Objectives: ELEVATE provides structured leadership sessions that guide student-athletes through self-reflection, scenario-based learning, and group dialogue. The program develops confidence, composure, character, and accountability, while equipping students with strategies to manage pressure, resolve conflict, and encourage peers.

Impact on Achievement: By building these skills, students demonstrate greater self-discipline, stronger focus, and improved communication—leading to increased learning gains and proficiency. Students who see themselves as leaders are more likely to stay engaged in class, model positive behavior for peers, and apply problem-solving skills beyond sports. The result is a ripple effect: player-led leadership within their team settings, stronger classroom performance, a healthier school culture, and a more connected student body.

Immersive Learning to Scientific Literacy

Dune Lakes Elementary School

This project seeks to elevate student achievement in science by providing an immersive, three-dimensional learning experience through an inflatable planetarium. Approximately 500 third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students will participate in interactive lessons exploring the moon, moon phases, the Solar System, and space. Elementary students often struggle to gunderstand and internalize abstract astronomical concepts such as moon phases, planetary motion, and the vast scale of the solar system. The planetarium directly addresses this need by transforming abstract ideas into concrete, observable phenomena. This engaging environment will increase student proficiency in science standards, spark curiosity, and promote critical thinking and inquiry-based learning.

Flexible Seating

Van R Butler Elementary

Children are naturally active and learn most effectively when their physical and sensory needs are supported. However, traditional classroom environments often require students to remain seated in fixed positions for extended periods, which can negatively affect concentration and lead to off-task behaviors. These behaviors are not acts of defiance but rather signs that the learning environment is not meeting the developmental needs of young learners.

This project aims to improve student achievement by transforming the classroom into a more responsive and student-centered space through the use of flexible seating. By offering options such as wobble stools and other movement-friendly seating choices, students will be empowered to select seating that helps them stay focused, comfortable, and engaged. When students feel physically supported and have choice in their learning environment, they are more likely to take ownership of their behavior and academic responsibilities.

Flexible seating supports the development of critical executive functioning skills such as self-regulation, sustained attention, and decision-making—skills that are essential for academic success. As a result, students are expected to demonstrate increased time on task, higher levels of participation, and improved work completion.

To evaluate the effectiveness of this project, I will track student engagement, behavior, and productivity using classroom data such as task completion rates and the frequency of redirections. My goal is to see a measurable increase in focus and academic performance throughout the 2025–26 school year. In the long term, this flexible seating initiative will continue to foster a positive and productive learning environment that benefits both current and future students.

Seeds of Success: Agriculture for All Learners

Freeport High School

This project will directly support student achievement by giving second-year agriculture students a hands-on opportunity to apply their classroom learning to a real-world challenge. Our students have already demonstrated proficiency by earning an industry certification, and this project builds on that success by advancing their technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork. The need addressed is the improvement of the existing irrigation system for five raised beds in our outdoor growing area, which currently requires frequent manual watering and does not provide consistent coverage.

The objective is for students to research, design, and construct an improved irrigation system that is efficient, sustainable, and aligned with best practices in modern agriculture. Once the raised bed irrigation is improved, students will expand their design skills by addressing various hydroponic systems currently being used. These systems need adjustments and modifications that will not only increase yield but also make them easier to manage on a daily basis. Through this process, students will strengthen their understanding of water management, soil and soilless plant production, and sustainable agriculture techniques.

By engaging in this multi-phase project, students will enhance critical thinking, collaboration, and project-planning skills—competencies that translate into measurable learning gains and increased proficiency across agricultural and STEM standards. Ultimately, this project empowers students to move beyond theory into applied practice. It creates a learning environment where they can see the impact of their decisions on crop yield and plant health, reinforcing mastery of academic content while preparing them for postsecondary education and careers in agriculture and related industries.

Dream Big, Read Bigger

Dune Lakes Elementary School

Many of my students are beginning readers who need daily opportunities to practice with a wide variety of texts. At this stage, quantity matters. A strong classroom library should include hundreds of books so students can easily find titles at their level, revisit favorites for fluency, and explore new stories that challenge and excite them. Right now, my library is too limited to provide this level of choice and exposure.

By adding a greater number of books, this project will:
*Increase reading volume by giving students more opportunities to read multiple books each week, a key driver of early literacy growth.
*Support skill development by offering enough leveled books for students to practice decoding, fluency, and comprehension daily.
*Build confidence by ensuring new readers can consistently find texts that match their ability, helping them feel successful as they progress.
*Encourage independence by providing enough titles for frequent book exchanges so students always have something “just right” to read.
*Boost achievement as more practice with a variety of books leads directly to improved proficiency and long-term reading gains.

Expanding the classroom library with a larger quantity of high-interest, level-appropriate books will create a reading-rich environment where every student has the resources they need to grow from new readers into fluent, confident ones.

Ag-Xcelerate: Hands-On Agriculture for Student Achievement

Freeport High School

The goal of this project is to enhance student achievement through hands-on, inquiry-based agricultural learning experiences. Currently, students have limited access to the hand tools and materials necessary to fully engage in applied agricultural practices. Without adequate supplies such as soil, pots, clippers, and hydroponic materials, learning is restricted to theory rather than practice, limiting student proficiency in both agricultural skills and broader problem-solving abilities.

This project will provide the resources and materials needed for students to maintain real-world agricultural systems, from traditional gardening to growing beds, and then to the implementation of various hydroponic setups. These experiences will foster critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation while reinforcing key concepts in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

By engaging almost 200 students—including traditional learners, those often in self-contained classrooms, and students with exceptional abilities —the project ensures equitable access to meaningful, hands-on opportunities that connect classroom knowledge to practical applications. These experiences will lead to measurable learning gains by ensuring students both earn a year of science credit by successfully passing Agriscience Foundations 1 and earn an acceleration point by successfully passing at least one industry standard certification that benefits the entire school community because acceleration points is part of the school grade calculation. Last year, there were 5 classes with one teacher in Agriscience Foundations 1 (100 students). All students earned science credit, and 95 of the 100 students earned an acceleration point. This year there are almost double the number of students enrolled (almost 200 students in 8 courses with two instructors. This grant will be used to expand the available materials for students to use to fully participate in agriculture (both the vegetable and nursery industry).

Ultimately, this project empowers students to grow both knowledge and confidence, equipping them with skills that will support lifelong learning and future career readiness.

'AR to the Rescue!'

Walton Intensity School of Excellence

Our project seeks to increase student literacy achievement by creating accessible, engaging classroom libraries and by providing meaningful reading incentives for students who reach personal goals in Accelerated Reader by earning AR Points.

Currently, our school does not have a dedicated library space, which limits students' access to high interest, age-appropriate books. Many of our students are striving to build positive reading habits and improve their reading comprehension and fluency, but their opportunities to explore books that match their interest and reading levels need to be expanded.

Students at our school often enter below grade level in reading proficiency, which presents a need for strong initiatives that deliberately target improving literacy among students. Without a school library, they have limited exposure to various literature, genres, and authors that can foster a lifelong love of reading. Providing well-stocked classroom libraries will allow students immediate access to books during class and free reading time, removing the barrier of limited resources.

Objectives:
1. Increase Reading Engagement: Encourage students to read more frequently by offering a wider selection of high interest books that are available to them.
2. Promote Literacy Growth: Support measurable gains in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency through consistent, self-selected reading and AR goal setting.
3. Foster a Reading Culture: Recognize and celebrate reading achievement through tangible rewards, helping students associate reading success with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
4. Support Learning Gains: Use AR data and STAR Reading Assessment data to monitor progress, aiming for measurable learning gains in reading proficiency between September 2025 through March 2026.

Classroom Literacy

Freeport Elementary

Currently, 69% of students in my second-grade classroom are reading below grade level based on benchmark assessments and progress monitoring data. Many of these students struggle with phonics, decoding, and reading fluency, which directly impacts comprehension and overall academic achievement. By providing the resources and structured support necessary to meet diverse reading needs, we can transform struggling readers into confident, proficient learners. This initiative will not only raise proficiency levels in second grade but also set a strong foundation for future academic succes.

Second grade is a critical year for literacy development — it is the stage where students transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Without targeted support and engaging reading interventions, these students risk falling further behind across all content areas.

Additionally, limited classroom resources and outdated leveled texts restrict opportunities for differentiated instruction. There is a need for high-interest, leveled reading materials, interactive literacy centers, and digital supports to foster engagement and strengthen foundational reading skills.

“The Market of Make-Believe Farmers Market: Dramatic Play That Grows Real Math Skills”

Freeport Elementary

The Market of Make-Believe Farmers Market Dramatic Play Center will increase student achievement by providing a hands-on, accessible, and engaging way for students with disabilities to practice both functional and academic math skills. Through dramatic play experiences such as shopping, sorting produce, counting money, and measuring items, students will connect imagination with real-world application. This center will foster gains in early numeracy, functional independence, and communication, while also promoting social interaction and classroom community.

Many of our special education students require concrete, hands-on learning experiences to build understanding of abstract math concepts. Traditional paper-pencil tasks often do not meet their needs or provide enough opportunities for meaningful practice. Students benefit most from instruction that includes multiple opportunities for practice with visual supports, manipulatives, and role-play, all of which increase retention and generalization of skills. In addition, real-world math concepts—such as money use, measurement, and sorting—are essential life skills but can be difficult to embed without authentic contexts. The farmers market play center creates a natural, motivating environment where these skills can be taught and reinforced.

The objectives of this project are multi-layered. Students will demonstrate progress in functional math skills such as counting, identifying coins and bills, making simple exchanges, and measuring produce, with growth documented through their individualized education program (IEP) goals and progress monitoring data. The center will also increase student engagement, as students are more likely to participate in market play when props, visuals, and adult support are provided. Equally important, the play environment will foster communication and social interaction, giving students opportunities to practice role-play language such as, “I would like to buy…” or “Here is your change,” while developing turn-taking, requesting, and shared attention. Finally, students will generalize their skills beyond the center by transferring what they learn to classroom activities, community outings, and other functional tasks.

The impact on student achievement will be significant. By embedding math instruction in a high-interest, meaningful setting, students will receive repeated, scaffolded practice that supports their academic and functional growth. They will build functional independence in money use, counting, and measuring while simultaneously developing communication and social skills that are critical for daily living. Just as importantly, they will gain confidence and ownership of their learning through imaginative role-play, which supports motivation and self-regulation. This project will directly support students’ IEP goals, strengthen math readiness, and create measurable learning gains, while also fostering inclusion, engagement, and a strong sense of classroom community.

Oh the Thinks You Can Create-Building Literacy Through the Arts

Emerald Coast Middle School

This project aims to strengthen student achievement in literacy, communication and collaboration through a hands-on, cross curricular partnership among the Theatre, Art, and English Language Arts (ELA) departments. By producing Seussical Jr., students will not only explore performance, design and storytelling but also directly engage with reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and creative writing-all key components of our schoolwide literacy initiative. Theatre and Art students will work together to design, construct, and perform Seussical Jr., a musical that celebrates imagination, reading comprehension, and creative expression.

Working closely with ELA teacher Ms. Alford, our theatre curriculum has been intentionally aligned with literacy standards to support reading fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension skills. Ms. Alford has guided the integration of text-based activities into the theatre classroom, including the use of graphic organizers, text analysis tools, and reading strategies to deepen understanding of character motivation, plot, and theme.

This collaboration bridges the gap between literacy and the arts by empowering students to read, interpret, and perform text while applying artistic design principles to visualize and build the story world. The ultimate goal is to improve reading proficiency and engagement through meaningful, hands-on experiences that bring literature to life.
