The goal is to empower the students' pursuit of life-long learning and to inspire them to shape and reinvent their world through making, creating and iterating. The students will use their problem solving and critical thinking skills to independently or collaboratively build a variety of electronics at multiple levels of difficulty. I want to make learning fun and get the students excited about STEM!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 480

Special areas, called Makerspaces, were set up in the media center. These areas housed a variety of STEM projects. Many featured the littleBit kits. These kits allowed students to independently or collaboratively create a variety of simple electronics using the supplies and instructions available in the kits Students were familiar with Little Bits from using them with the Science Coach in the classroom. They were super excited to be able to explore more in the media center! We used the kits in both the media center and in the classrooms when needed for whole group challenges. I quickly realized I needed to come up with a system to organize the bits, since there are many loose pieces. I used some thread storage boxes that I had but would like to work on developing a better system, one that could be labeled.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to empower the students' pursuit of life-long learning and to inspire them to shape and reinvent their world through making, creating and iterating. The students will use their problem solving and critical thinking skills to independently or collaboratively build a variety of electronics at multiple levels of difficulty. I want to make learning fun and get the students excited about STEM!

What will be done with my students

Special areas, called Makerspaces, will be set up in the media center. These areas will house a variety of STEM projects. Many will feature the littleBit kits. These kits allow students to independently or collaboratively create a variety of simple electronics using the supplies and instructions available in the kits. Examples are a windmill, a thermostat or even shoes that light up when you stomp your feet!
These spaces will be facilitated by the media specialist but will be designed so that students can mostly create and explore independently or with peers.

Benefits to my students

Learning by doing provides in-depth understanding of concepts with application for real-life scenarios.
Working in pairs or teams, littleBits facilitates interactive group problem-solving and teamwork, especially in conjunction with design thinking processes.
These fun projects will get students excited about learning and also build their STEM skills and knowledge.

Budget Narrative

These kits will be able to be reused over and over again. The supplies purchased through this grant will give us unlimited project possibilities.
