The goal of this project is to give our second grade students high quality access to non-fiction articles that span across guided reading levels to maximize student growth, interest and love of reading. The collections of text each contain six color copies of a variety of non fiction texts as well as vocabulary and comprehension strategies that can be used during guided reading with the students. By grouping students into reading groups according to their instructional level and providing appealing and captivating authentic articles, students continue to build their self-monitoring and comprehension strategies to become more critical and aware readers of their reading material.

What will be done with my students

The Scholastic Short Reads will be used across second grade classrooms during guided reading time. Guided reading is a time where students have the opportunity to meet with a teacher in small groups and receive differentiated reading instruction based on individual strengths and areas to develop as a reader. As students get older, interest, appeal and content of texts can be pivotal factors that influence a students motivation, effort and attitude towards reading. These articles present across a broad array of topics from egg geodes, the Sonoran Desert, Madame Curie to invertebrates. Within these colorful articles are also authentic text structures such as: cause and effect, chronology, sequencing, problem and solution, compare and contrast which are main focal points of the second grade language arts Florida Standards.

The following provides a brief overview of many of the standards covered:
LAFS.2.RI.1.1- The student asks and answers such questions as who, what, where, when, why and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

LAFS.2.RI.1.2 - The student identifies the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.
LAFS.2.RI.2.5 - The student knows and uses various text features to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.
LAFS.2.RI.2.6- Learning Goal: The student identifies the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.
LAFS.2.RI.3.7 – Learning Goal: The student explains how specific images contribute to and clarify a text.
LAFS.2.RI.3.8 – The student describes how an author uses reasons to support specific points
in a text.
LAFS.2.SL.1.2- The student recounts or describes key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.

After being instructed on comprehension strategies and content specific vocabulary students may participate in a broad array of extension activities as determined appropriate by their classroom teacher. Activities may include:
-creating a digital presentation of the information learned
-researching a counter argument to the opinion presented in the text
-examining the structure of the non-fiction piece
-creating a brochure to an appropriate audience trying to persuade a certain opinion on a topic
-using I-Movie to create a movie trailer to share the importance of information learned

Benefits to my students

As we continue to become a more digital society our students not only read print, but also e-books, commercials, info-graphics and magazines across numerous platforms.

Our students live in a world in which reading does not involve just reading text, but rather it is layered upon visual accessories of photographs, charts, maps, tabs, hyperlinks, embedded videos, and other text features.

To support our students in developing critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze and evaluate texts, we must provide them the access to text that is inviting, relevant, inspiring and interesting to them.
