My goal for this grant request is to purchase five copies from the 3-5 Sunshine State Young Readers list so that my students can participate in the SSYRA challenge for our state. According to the State of Florida, "The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency."

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 70

Words can't even begin to explain how much this grant has impacted my classroom.  With the funds, I was able to purchase all of the Sunshine State Young Reader Award books for the 3-5 list.  I have had over a third of the students finish the books already, and many are well on their way to finishing them before our May 18th deadline.  Through this grant, I have seen an increased love for reading with my students.  They have been excited about reading the books, arguing sometimes over who will get to read one of the copies, and excitedly coming to me to tell me all about their literary adventures.  Receiving this grant was an incredible blessing.  We cannot thank you enough for your kindness and generosity!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal for this grant request is to purchase five copies from the 3-5 Sunshine State Young Readers list so that my students can participate in the SSYRA challenge for our state. According to the State of Florida, "The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency."

What will be done with my students

The students will have the opportunity to participate in the Sunshine States Young Readers Award program through the funding of this grant. This purpose of this program is to further childrens' love of literature through the exposure to texts selected by state-wide librarians who recommend these books to expand a child's imagination. In order to participate in the program, students must read 15 books from the 3-5 grade list. The purpose of implementing this program into my classroom is to encourage students to read in school and at home. My hope is to be able to get five copies of each book so that the students have the opportunity to take them home and read them as part of their homework. Any student that reads all 15 books by the end of the school year will receive a certificate, and 8 x 10 photo on our schools "SSYRA Wall of Fame", and an end of year celebration which will include an ice cream party.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of this grant is to better students' understanding of literature and expand their vocabulary, imagination, and fluency. Exposure to these books will hopefully incite them to become life-long readers; a goal of educators everywhere.
