Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 200

What's in a Word? Power, motivation and comfort. That's what we learned at Golden Gate Elementary as we implemented this grant. Students worked with the counselor to identify a word to engrave on their bracelets, some words were descriptive and expressed a student's strengths and unique qualities; and, some words expressed a need for comfort or motivation. I worked with one student who was suffering from extreme school anxiety, and morning after morning he sat in my office in tears trying to conjure up the courage to go to class. One morning he engraved the word 'BRAVE' onto a bracelet; to be honest, I had him do this as a distraction, since I was running out of ideas of ways to try to help him. It amazed me, the act of engraving the letters seemed to calm him and he then took the bracelet, put it is his pocket and he was able to go to class. I don't know if it was coincidence or a turning point for him, but the mornings that followed were much easier for him. This project touched many different groups of students, some who were in trouble and needed direction, some who were working hard and used it as motivation, some engraved words that helped them feel apart of our school community and some words signified success and celebration.  This grant enabled me, as a counselor, to initiate many different conversations with students, and I am so grateful for that opportunity to use the bracelets to empower, motivate and comfort the students here at Golden Gate Elementary.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What's in a word? Power! The power to express our hopes, our dreams, our goals, our strengths and our talents. The goal of this project is to help students identify a word to express their hopes, their dreams, their goals, their strengths and their talents. The word will then be inscribed on a bracelet to serve as a reminder and motivation to help students more in a positive direction to achieve their goals.

What will be done with my students

Students will work with the School Counselor, to identify their dreams and goals, and their strengths and talents. They will then identify a meaningful word that will serve as a reminder and a motivator to help students utilize their strengths and talents to achieve their dreams and goals. Each student will inscribe their word onto a disk using the 'My Intent' engraving machine, they will then create a bracelet with that disk. Students will wear the bracelet that they have created as a reminder of their strengths, goals and dreams. As students wear their bracelets, it will also serve as a conversation starter, and they will have the opportunity to talk about their word and how it relates to the achievement of their goals.

Benefits to my students

According to research by Dr. Gail Matthews, writing down a goal increases the chances of achieving that goal, talking about your goals makes success even more likely. As students identify a word, write that word down, through engraving and creating a bracelet, and wear the bracelet as a reminder to themselves and a catalyst for conversation with others, students will meet the criteria set forth in this research and make better choices, work harder and achieve more success in reaching their goals.

Budget Narrative

The budget includes a discount of 35%. This project will be able to be continued in the future at a lesser cost, since this budget includes the purchase of the engraving machine.
