Writing is a skill. In order for our students to fully understand the writing process, they need good models. Our Media Center is full of rich literature, but typically only has 1 copy of each text. Our goal is to provide team sets of 5 texts so that each teacher in the grade levels may provide the same mentor text, or model text, in a lesson, from which students can learn strong writing techniques during one week of simultaneous teaching of lessons.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 515

Students have been emersed in rich text, which has created role model writing, for our young writers to learn from. The writer's workshop style lessons which accompany our newly purchased mentor texts have inspired our teachers to deliver new engaging lessons to our budding authors. Skills aquired have been strong beginnings, unique transitions, poetry techniques, and conventions, to name a few. Best of all, we are already preparing for our use of these mentor texts for next year's lessons. These books have added a rich resource to our writing tools.

We continue to be grateful to Champions for Learning for funding this grant and making these mentor texts available to our teachers and students.

Skill Groups of Mentor Texts

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Writing is a skill. In order for our students to fully understand the writing process, they need good models. Our Media Center is full of rich literature, but typically only has 1 copy of each text. Our goal is to provide team sets of 5 texts so that each teacher in the grade levels may provide the same mentor text, or model text, in a lesson, from which students can learn strong writing techniques during one week of simultaneous teaching of lessons.

What will be done with my students

Students will be read aloud to by teachers. The text will stay in the classroom for students to refer back to as they work on their independent writing. Students will learn skills like strong beginnings, transition sentences, poetry techniques, conventions, and much more from these established authors. Allowing the text to remain in the classroom (as opposed to transitioning through each teammates classroom throughout the week) is important. It allows students to further study and refer to the lesson taught, as they write.

Benefits to my students

When we unveil the mystery of writing and demonstrate with good models, students find that good writing is achievable. They learn to read deeper and look for writing techniques as they read. Together, the lessons provided by these mentor texts will develop both better writers and readers.
