Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 120

Students learned first hand how germs can spread throughout a population with our Glo Germ Kits. As students returned to campus and safety precautions were practiced we then create a Glo Germ Pandemic mystery. Students wore gloves in class and were given some lotion to spread on their gloves. Given an amount of interactions (gloved handshakes) students had to use the blacklight to see traces of Glo Germs to contact trace the germs back to their source. Each class was very excited to solve the myster and requested to play again in different rounds with new infections and vaccine variations. Our SARS virus plush stays up on the teacher desk and front board to remind students of how easily we can stop the spread of COVID-19.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

For students to better understand how scientists study the spread of diseases and why the everyday routines of normal life changed because of an invisible threat.

What will be done with my students

Whether students are in person or online this lesson is built to explore how certain microbes and viruses are spread. I will set up an outbreak zone in class that students will have to use the appropriate tools to find how the virus spreads. If we are online I will film and photograph the outbreak area and complete as an online interactive game where students choose what to do and I film reactions for each choice. Students will then test ways to stop the spread of this virus. This real life learning model with glo germs will allow for students to see the invisible virus with a black light and immediately test measures to stop the spread.

Benefits to my students

Students will understand the importance of scientific research that occurs everyday, especially, during a pandemic. Students will be more careful about following these precautions for the safety of all and better understand why their daily life has changed so much over the course of the last few months.

Budget Narrative

The Glo Germ kit includes all needed supplies and I have added one refill for the lotion and powder so the activity can be done safely with each class having their own out break area that is clean and sanitized each day. The soap dispenser is shaped like a microbe and one of the tests is to see if hand washing makes a difference in the spread of the virus. The soap dispenser will stay in class by the sink all year as a reminder of why we follow proper hand washing procedures.
