Impact to My Classroom

My students have a unit each year where they work on coding and robotics. This year thanks to the Off to The Races grant the students were able to see thier robot race in the water. Most robots are not submersible but Sphero is. They truly enjoyed seeing the robot in a different light. They were able to apply the skills from the unit and apply it to yet another aspect. As a win-win for the lesson, they learned to problem solve and collaborate while getting their robot to cross the finish line.

Original Grant Overview

Goal(s)

Students will code robots to win a race. This will require problem solving and collaboration skills.

Project Description

Students will enter a friendly race. They will code their Sphero robot to "swim" across the course. Challenges will be given that the students and the students will need to code their Sphero to win the race.

Expected Outcomes

Students will work in groups to get their Sphero to cross the finish line first. Sphero can "swim" and the students will need to code him to race against the others in the fun competition.

2 inflatable regatta raceways, plus tax and shipping
