The goal of this grant would be to provide a welcoming environment for students to congregate and explore their options for after high school. Currently we have plastic chairs and despite having a great space, students do not want to spend time in it. Much more planning and discussion amongst students about their future plans could be explored with more welcoming set up.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 200

As a result of recieving this grant from Champions for Learning, The Immokalee High School College and Career office was able to be transformed into a place where students could explore post secondary options. The addition of more seating options allows for students to feel relaxed while they are completing college applications and scholarship proposals. Before receiving the grant, we just had plastic chairs and students frequently would ask questions and then return to the media center to work. Now students have a place to sit down and work on their future plans in close proximity to their college and career counselor.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant would be to provide a welcoming environment for students to congregate and explore their options for after high school. Currently we have plastic chairs and despite having a great space, students do not want to spend time in it. Much more planning and discussion amongst students about their future plans could be explored with more welcoming set up.

What will be done with my students

I work with students in 9th-12th grade to explore their interests in order to develop plans for achieving their goals during and after high school. I would like my office to be welcoming so students do not feel intimidated like this is just another office on campus. My students will utilize the furniture to complete university and scholarship applications. I can also host small group events in the room such as admissions presentations. This office would be utilized by students on a daily basis to explore, plan, and work to achieve their goals.

Benefits to my students

A sterile office with white walls and plastic furniture is not a welcoming sight for students. My hope is by improving the furniture, students will feel welcomed in the office they will likely spend more time checking in with me about their progress toward their goals. Increased attention to their post secondary plans will increase the likelihood of achieving their goals.
