Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 5

For over the past ten years, the Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) Migrant Education Program has been able to offer scholarships to CCPS graduating migrant seniors. This award helps students begin their lives after high school (e.g., a monetary scholarship and/or a laptop computer). We like to include personal laptops, since laptops are essential when attending post-secondary schooling, but last year we almost did not to give out laptops. Every year our scholarship is dependent on donations from the community. Thanks to the support of Champions for Learning, we were able to give a laptop to five CCPS 2024 graduating migrant seniors. All five students will be attending college in the fall. One student will be attending the University of South Florida, two students will be attending Michigan State University, and two students will be attending Florida Gulf Coast University. They were all grateful and elated to receive a personal laptop, especially since upon graduation they must return the school issued laptop they are currently using. Some of the students were worried about completing some of the required items for college once they returned the school issued laptop, so having a laptop of their own took some of their concerns away. Being given a personal laptop to use has taken some of the financial burden off them and their family. They do not have to strategize on how to use the computer center at the university they are attending or how to buy a laptop. Thank you for allowing the CCPS Migrant Program to be able to continue to give laptops to scholarship recipients who are pursuing post-secondary education. We aim to find ways to remove barriers so students are successful in school and life and with this grant, five students do not have to worry about obtaining a laptop for college.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide personal laptops to graduating migrant seniors so they are better prepared when starting their life after high school.

What will be done with my students

Five Collier County Public Schools Migrant Seniors will be chosen (based off scholarship application) to receive a personal laptop to assist them in starting their life after high school.

Benefits to my students

CCPS students are given a laptop to use while in school, but upon graduation, the students must return the laptops. This leaves many students without the resource needed while attending post secondary schooling or starting their career. With the opportunity to receive a personal laptop, students have one less post high school graduate worry and are a little more prepared for life after high school.
