Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 54

This grant allowed our second grade teachers to expand their students' learning with our science curriculum. With this grant, we were able to purchase grow kits to better understand the parts of a plant and the plant life cycle. We also recieved manipulatives for the life cycle of different animals, which students were able to move around and place in the correct order to improve their understanding. This grant also funded basic consumables needed for small science experiements like solar s'mores ovens, science field trip materials, and even solar eclipse glasses! Out of everything this grant helped fund, I believe the most impactful was the ladybug and butterfly habitats. All 2nd grade classes were able to purchase lady bug larvae and caterpillars to watch these lifecycles in the classroom! This was an extremely exciting process and very engaging for students!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to provide our second graders with hands on science activities.

What will be done with my students

Our second graders will experience plant and animal life cycles hands on. Students will use the lifecycle kits to place the ladybug, tadpole, or butterfly lifecycle in the correct order with their partner. They'll also get the opportunity to see ladybugs and butterflies complete their lifecycles and release them into the wild.
Also, in science we do many hands on activities where we buy supplies like cups, potting soil, straws, balloons and other items that are used to teach different science standards. These items can't be reused so we purchase them year after year. The consumable science materials fund will allow us to purchase these materials to continue to do hands on, engaging activities with our students.

Benefits to my students

Our students will greatly benefit from their hands on science activities. These activities will bring learning to life and they'll be more likely to remember what they've learned.

Budget Narrative

This project will benefit all second graders at Herbert Cambridge Elementary.
