I would like every third grader at Manatee Elementary school to get the wonderful experience of learning to read music and play the recorder ( a small plastic flute). It would be special if each of these students at this Title I school could have an instrument of their own to practice, without having to worry about paying for it.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 116

This year was quite the experience for me. It was my first time doing this, but the students were very excited to have this chance.

We started by just passing out the recorders and putting their names on the recorders and cases.  We spent the first several weeks practicing good posture, correct hand position and the best way to make a sound.  Using our music program site and the introduction of the book, we worked on the specifics of playing.

The real challenge is when we start to read music off a staff.  They are already pretty good at reading rhythms, as we have been working on this since the start of the year.  Figuring out the notes sitting on a staff becomes more difficult.  We play games and practice a few notes at a time to improve. We do recorder olympics with our program.

I have heard of a reward system that uses ribbons to tie on the end of their recorders when they pass a certain song with as many different notes. I would like to implement that next year.

With minimal practice and exposure, they performed very well. Can't wait to do better next year!

(The pictures were taken at the way beginning before they knew how to play.) (The video was recorder olymics. Trying to learn to read the duration of notes and play.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I would like every third grader at Manatee Elementary school to get the wonderful experience of learning to read music and play the recorder ( a small plastic flute). It would be special if each of these students at this Title I school could have an instrument of their own to practice, without having to worry about paying for it.

What will be done with my students

Third grade students will review music reading skills during September and October. By the time they receive their instruments in November, they will learn proper posture, finger position and playing technique. By using the book and additional resources the students gradually increase their ability to read the music and play at the same time.
By April and May, students will be able to play at least ten different simple songs from the textbook. Besides playing for the class, we will invite the parents and the second graders to enjoy in their success!

Benefits to my students

There is a huge benefit to students learning to play an instrument at a young age. Research shows that doing this can increase brain capacity. There is so many skills students need to master in order to be successful. They must be able to read and play at the same time, listen and adjust, play along with others and more. That takes a certain level of concentration that is built over time. This will benefit students in the future. Especially if they aspire to be musicians!
