Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 198

Throughout the year, our middle school (6-8) ELA students benefitted greatly from the Scholastic Scope magazines. Whether students used the articles for review and practice of standards, they were then able to transfer their knowledge of the standards to cumulative assignments.

For example, the two photos attached represent students putting into practice their knowledge of tone/mood and genres of texts.

The lesson plan that is attached shows how we used one of the issues to cover many standards and hold a Socratic Seminar discussing on Martin Luther King, Jr.

Students also used the attach graphic organizer to go through Scholastic magazines to find text features.

The yearlong subscription allowed for current events while learning and practice different standards.  Many articles also led to great class discussions as well.

Original Grant Overview

What will be done with my students

Students will read fascinating stories that will help students become stronger readers, writers, and thinkers with the multi-genre magazine created just for middle school. Also, the different genres will help increase vocabulary and knowledge and—most of all—open doors of curiosity.

Benefits to my students

My goal is to raise student achievement by aligning lessons to instructional goals with built-in correlations to state and national standards. Every student will succeed through motivating skills practice and differentiation on individual needs leading to grade-level mastery.
Students will be able to have stories on multiple Lexile levels, read-aloud and text-to-speech audio, and scaffolded quizzes and activities. In order to meet the needs of each student, this subscription will provide a variety of differentiation in order for students to achieve mastery.
